anything ancient is pretty cool. did anyone identify the time period? I know I cant lol. But I will guess. 200 ad.

oh, so those words under the pic of the ancient meant something, lol. very cool find. my guess was decent.

It's Constantine the Great ca. 315 AD.
The reverse has Jupiter standing with legend SOLI INVICTO COMIITI - "To the unconquered sun (god).

I'm 63 years old and started collecting when I was probably about 7 or 8 so around 1958. While I don't search rolls, I do check my change pretty religiously from the time started collecting. I would say the last time I got a Wheat cent in my change was probably around 1964. I've never in my life received an Indian Head cent in change. When I was about 12 my grandfather who knew I collected coins asked me about a penny he found in his poker penny jar---it was a Flying Eagle cent. He drove me to the library so I could run in and check it's value in a Red Book (around $1.50 at the time and the coin so badly pitted I told him he might as well use it in his next poker game). How do people come up with these finds? I know you're going to say it's the amount of coins they go through, but I gotta figure that in the 50+ years I've gone through change that has to amount to the equivalent of a lot of rolls. (Back in the mid 70's I deposited my paycheck at the bank and asked the teller for halves in the change and got about 5 or 6 40% silver coins in my change and that's the biggest "find" of my life. |

Exactly what you have said, it's heavily volume, but sometimes also luck. I have 13 Indian Head cents, 13 Canadian George V's, and somewhere more than 2 boxes of wheats. I also acquire a minimum of 3 boxes of cents every week. Sometimes like last weekend when we had a family vacation in Indianapolis, I picked up 14 boxes of cents to bring home. Sometimes it's luck as well. A month ago I went to the local store to pick up a gallon of milk and got a silver dime as change. |

12 wheats out of the last box. I now have this one bank trained to only grab me old boxes. 5 good boxes in a row since. I found an Easter cent, and I think my first Cud. And it appears to be pretty good size? I saw smaller ones on ebay with bidding around 15$. having an issue posting pics at the moment, but I have the resized images. will try again later. edit, here we go!    Edited by skibdib

Well....searching a LOT of bank boxes. We're searching 2500 coins in a box and some people can do that in a day. A hardcore searcher will look at far more coins than you do checking your change every day even over the course of years. Another factor it plain old luck. You have to consider that people toss pennies into jars and such and they may sit for decades. Eventually, those get dumped into circulation and find their ways into collectors hands. Skibs - nice Cud! Did you look it up on line yet? http://cuds-on-coins.com/That looks pretty significant!! Howell - The reverse it true here: how could you go 50 years without getting an LWC in your change? Wow!! For sure, finding them in the sea of LMCs makes the chance find even chancier, but I have to think that the LWCs might have been avoiding you. I hope you decide to grab a box and find a few.
