Did two 50$ bags this AM. Second one had 37 wheats - including about 7 or 8 pre-40 ones. Way above average on the number overall and the number of pre-40. I am in an area a little slower than others for wheats. Average about 12-18/Bag

....and a 91 IHC. The IHC was Typical of the condition I have found them in the past, little or no "liberty" showing, but in decent shape.

Hey everyone just started roll search a year ago. Anyway picked up a $25 brick of cents a couple days ago and still have about five rolls left but heres my take so far: 3 1970-S small dates, a 1973-D DDO, and a 1972-D DDO both minor doubleddies, several wheats including a '43 steele and a '58 BU and several RPMs.

That's a real nice assortment of finds coming off one box! It's a good illustration of what can be pulled if a person expands their horizons beyond looking just for Wheaties and copper. That's the one good reason to CRH cents.....because there is so much variety of potential good finds to look for.

Well, it took me a couple of weeks but I finally finished reading this entire thread.....all 705 pages. Whew! It was very worthwhile. I learned a lot from the old-timers here who've been at this for some time now.

One thing that I've noticed is many here get VERY upset when their bank gives them a box of solid BU Shields. . I suppose I can understand that reaction if all you care about are finding old Lincoln's and IHC's for your Dansco albums, but there is still great stuff to be found in BU bricks of Shields fresh from the mint. The next time you get such a box and think you've been handed a lemon, go make lemonade out of it! . Here are just a few of the things you should be looking for:

* Supergrade Gems, (MS67 through MS70). There was a person who found an extremely rare MS70 Zincoln in a BWR a few years ago and the estimated auction value was....(drum roll please)....$15,000! . Learn to grade MS Lincoln's. It pays!

* Error Coins: You are more likely to find nice blank planchets, clips, off-centers, greasers, double strikes, mules, brockages, etc. in fresh, new uncirculated rolls that have come straight from the mint via the Fed to your bank. No one else has ever searched these coins before, so all the best finds are hiding in these rolls awaiting your discovery. Once these coins enter circulation most of the most dramatic and valuable errors are quickly plucked away by folks who notice the "funny looking penny" they received in their change....making it unlikely that the really good stuff will circulate long enough to make it back into circulated rolls. Best of all, everything you find is MINT STATE which dramatically increases the value of most error finds. If you are unfamiliar with error coins go to the CONECA website and read up a bit.

* Die Varieties: Examine every coin for scarce die varieties. Just because there are no new listings in the Cherry Picker's Guide for your shiny new 2015-D Shield Zincoln doesn't mean the mint won't produce any this year. Every known die variety was once unknown and some sharp-eyed roll searcher had to be the discoverer of that variety.

Keep in mind that virtually all MS errors and varieties are worth more money than the typical circulated Wheat cent - the overwhelming majority of which are worth about 3 or 4 cents each. So if you actually want your hobby to pay for itself, this is another way to achieve that goal.

I hope that this information will give more encouragement to those who were operating under the mistaken assumption that boxes of newly minted cents from the mint were of no value to search. It's just a numbers game combined with educating yourself about what is numismatically valuable to collectors. Good luck and happy searching!

Nice to find a couple pre-30s LWCs! Double check your D mint Lincolns (pun intended). You may have a variety in hand!

Just completed my 3rd box. It weighed-in at 14 lbs., 10.5 oz. so it was light on coppers, but it was a productive box nonetheless. Here are the finds:

10 Wheat Cents: 1917, 1941, 1944-D, 1945, 1945-D, 1951, 1951-S, 1952-D, 1957-D, 1958-D.

4 Canadian Cents: 1956, 1972, 1981, 1995.

49 AU/BU LMR Cents: 1968(x4), 1968-S, 1969(x2), 1970(x6), 1970-S(x5), 1971(x2), 1972(x3), 1972-D(x5), 1972-S, 1973(x3), 1973-D, 1973-S(x2), 1974(x2), 1974-D, 1975(x3), 1976, 1977, 1977-D, 1979(x2), 1981(x3)

2 Possible Mint Error or Die Varieties: 1988 A.U. with No F.G. on Reverse; 1994 with raised line on obverse.

Box Statistics: 16.52% Total Copper, 15.6% LMR P&D Mint Coppers, 0.52% 1968-74 S-Mint Coppers, 0.4% Wheats, 0.16% Canadians, 1 Dime Found.

Here are the pics:

1994 Zincoln - Possible Error or Die Variety? Can anyone tell me what this is? It's not a scratch and does not appear to be PMD.

Nice finds, ChildOfTheWheat! All wheats are fun to find but it's especially nice to find any Early Lincoln's pre-dating 1934. Would love to see a pic of your counter-stamped LMR!

Very nice finds!

Thanks, JBuck. Any idea what caused that raised line on the obverse of the 1994 Zincoln? It's an odd bird...

Not sure. It could be under the plating. I would post that one in the US Modern Variety and Error Coins forum for analysis!

Thanks for the recommendation. I just put up an inquiry there. I'm thinking that the line was pre-existing on a sheet of Zincoln cent alloy from which the planchet was cut, but if so I'm very curious to learn what error in the rolling process caused it. We'll see....
