I got the itch to do some coin roll hunting this past Saturday of all days, with almost no banks open, but I knew my credit union had a branch open so I gave them a call and they confirmed I could come pick up a box of nickels and a box of pennies. I drove over and as soon as I got to the parking lot I got a call from the teller at the bank saying that they could only give me $10 worth in pennies and not the full $50 I had requested. My first response was to say thanks but no thanks, but then I changed my mind right before I hung up and reluctantly said, "yeah, I'll take them."

I got in, picked them up, noticed there was a good variety of wrapping in the $10 worth I was getting, so they were mostly all CWR. I also noticed a 1947 penny on the end of one, so that was a very good sign in my mindthat there could be a few good rolls in the bunch. I loaded them into my car with the nickels and went on home.

When I unloaded them I was shocked to see writing on a few of the penny rolls (about 7) had writing on them that said: "WHEAT_PLAIN_MIXED DATES, WHEAT_D_MIXED_DATES, & WHEAT_S_MIXED_DATES". I couldn't believe these were not only A. turned in but B. nobody at the bank snatched them up immediately for themselves. I somehow managed to put these aside, open the nickels and other 10 penny rolls before then coming back to the last 7 marked penny rolls. 1 unmarked roll also contained plain date wheats as well, bringing the total hoard to 8 full rolls. As expected each roll was pure wheat glory. For the most part each roll contained exactly what was written on it. I was able to fill about 10 hole in my penny folders as a result. Here is the breakdown:

1914-1, 1917-1, 1918-2, 1918D-2, 1919-2, 1919D-1, 1919S-3

1920-1, 1927-1, 1929-3, 1929S-2

1930S-2, 1934-1, 1935-2, 1935S-5, 1936-4, 1936S-1, 1937-5, 1937S-4, 1938-2, 1939-4, 1939S-2, 1940-12

1940S-3, 1941-11, 1941D-3, 1942-11, 1942D-1, 1943D-2, 1943S-1, 1944-18, 1944D-3, 1944S-7, 1945-18, 1945D-4, 1945S-4, 1946-20, 1946D-11, 1946S-3, 1947-3, 1947D-3, 1947S-1, 1948-2, 1948D-2, 1949-1, 1949D-2, 1949S-1

1950-5, 1950D-8, 1950S-3, 1951-1, 1951D-18, 1951S-1, 1952-1, 1952D-20, 1953-1, 1953D-15, 1953S-6, 1954-1, 1954D-3, 1955-4, 1955D-17, 1956-6, 1956D-27, 1957-4, 1957D-29, 1958-4, 1958D-27

Total was right on 400 wheats! Amazing! I was especially surprised to see the 3 steel cents in there. Probably will never find another in a roll again. I learned a good lesson though: Always take a shot at any rolls the bank will give you! You just never know!

I'm getting confused where I should post some thing, so hopefully this is the place. I found this today while scavenging coins rolls.

Nice finds crazyforATB, I'm having the same luck with wheats, very few if any, before 1940. You have a decent number of S mint marks and Canadians. I'm planning on starting a Canadian cent book just to see what I have. Also, do you save the copper LMC or throw them back?

I am finding a lot of older pennies in great shape like the one above. Makes me wonder if people are selling their collections, or someone else is. I found this 1931 Canadian penny today. I only live a half mile from the boarder so I think they are pretty common up here.
