Regarding the strike of Buffalo nickels, are there any dates that typically combine a strong strike with strong luster?

1938 D is the most obtainable. Strike is usually very strong along with luster. The trickier part for this year is finding one in a high grade in an earlier die state.
For the most part, your mid-late 30's phili branch are well struck, better luster as the year progresses. These being '35-'38.
It's also relatively easy to find a well struck 1913 T-1 with good luster. Along with this, your post design change 1917 and 1918 are typically well struck. Luster on these are generally nice in high grades, but tends to be more satiny than the later years.

You mention 1939-D, but I thought that pretty much all Denver and San Francisco Buffs were weakly struck?

Across the board, Denver and San Francisco were more problematic, especially in the 20's. 30's weren't as bad, but still riddled with weak strikes. 1938 being the biggest exception. Strong strikes and great luster are common. This in combination with so many of these being saved and hoarded due to it being the last makes it easy to find high grade examples reasonably priced

If cents can be pennies, then bison can be buffaloes.

All pennies are cents, but not all cents are pennies. All bison are Buffalo, but not all Buffalo are bison......

Newest upgrade. Keep forgetting to update this thread. I'm sure I've picked up a few others that I haven't posted here, but posted to my Registry Set. Lately its been upgrades for ANACS slabbed examples. Just haven't found any of the tougher, missing dates that I'm happy with.
