I also only have the Aviator circulation piece, so glad Steve showed us the NCLT one.

The 50c and 10c of 1997 had low mintages and I have neither, no mob of roos dollar came out in 96 or 97. But lets talk about what I do have, a nice $2 and stunning 20c and 5c. Despite being 23 years old the average condition of these coins is still AU to borderline UNC which is decent.

Many of these coins were minted to a high standard too, although I suspect the collection these are from, someone rescued these coins from circulation in the 2000s.

I am willing to take a days break for Christmas day if you like and pick up with 1996 on Boxing Day, completely up to you guys!

6 degrees where I am but sunny!

I have a full set of 1997 NZ circulating coins as well today. I am particularly pleased that I got the 1997 $2 in change during my 1999 visit to NZ. I was concerned at the time that it might be a forgery as it looked a bit different to the others!

I think I have a solution. Tomorrow is Christmas, we will take a break and let everyone post anything from 2020 back to 1997 for catch up.

We will resume with 1996 on Boxing Day (Forum Time)

Numis Rob that $2 coin is a stunner, you were lucky to pick it up in 1999, mine was picked up in October 2020! and you can tell the difference!

OK. I'll use this break to post a catch up coin.

I received this for Christmas.

Lovely, nice design.

Here is mine, a 2008 double rimmed 5 cent coin, one left pronounced, other coin less so.

My set of A U S privy mark dollars from 2019 (These were apparently released in late 2018). There was also a rare one with a Pretzel(!) privy mark that is scarce with 5k minted.

No less than 3 examples of the 2020 End of world war 2 $2 coin, that is great and just leaves me to get the Fire engine one and I believe the Aboriginal flag one is out too.

Never ever got why Australians release coins in advance, whereas here in NZ, we are lucky if a coin with the same year as the current year it is pops out!

Just if anyone is confused, we are taking a days break between the year 1997 and 1996 for Christmas and a catch for any new treasures that have emerged since the thread started on December 1 forum time (Which is waaayyy behind time here in New Zealand and Australia)

Nice coins Princteane. I haven't herd about the pretzel coin.

I agree. I don't think 2021 coins should be released in 2020 etc. If it's released in 2020, then it is a 2020 coin.

It was in another thread, a one off release for a world food festival, in a card with a mintage of just 5k.

Now it is Boxing Day finally in America, we can move on to 1996 - what a year. Just two coins were issued for circulation in New Zealand. The two lowest and they are the only circulation ones we will see back to 1991.

This was the first issue of the 10 cent since 1989 and 12 million were minted, the 5 cent was the 3rd year in a row.
A curious fact is the lines either side of the date in coins of this year.

Again I am lucky to have near UNC examples.

Despite these limited circulation coins, full sets of coins were issued as Uncirculated and Proof sets in this era, just I don't have any to show. My NZ decimal coin thread has a list of the topics for each year. So its possible to find say a 50 cent dated 1996, as someone may have broken it out of a set and spent it (Really stupid as a set costs at least $40 back then).

1996 was also the first year of a series of City related $5 coins, a coin showing Auckland was released and it celbrated its 125th anniversary of city status (Founded in 1840, but only made a city in 1871). A $10 coin showing the General Grant ship which sank in 1866 was also released in NCLT.

I will be showing more NCLT from 1994 backwards and pretty much every year in the 1980s and 1970s.

Now for Australia, 1996 saw less circulation coins than usual, but plenty next to NZ!

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

No 10 cent was issued for Australia outside sets. The 20 cents, 5 cents are present. The only dollars issued for circulation was this Henry Parkes one. The issuing of dollar coins was sporadic for the first 12 years as we will see.

The $2 coin was a regular issue and the mintage of 13 million is quite low by usual standards.

Overall, a fairly dull year.

I'm just about to hit the sack ,but just
time to post one pic.

I find this one of the least exciting designs on an Aussie coin.
Sir Henry Parkes.

Well you will be pleased to know, the 5 cent coin was the only one issued for circulation in 1995, the year I started University.

And that 10 cent must be from a set, my book and Numista say no Aussie 10 cents were issued for circulation. Great to see one in the wild

My 1995 5 cent coin (Well best one of 11 examples I have, I seem to have more 5 cent pieces than I know what to do with - over 400 Kiwi and 225 Australian)

Starting tomorrow, I will be adding some NCLT for my Kiwi coin sparseness.

Out of interest, the 1995 - 1998 5 cent coins show a different style date for each one!

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

Just find it interesting when Australia, had the same style numbering right through!

There was not a shortage of change in 1995, back then a lot of the coins were 1986 to 1989 and still very shiny, and we had a boatload (Over 100 million) of $1 and $2 dated 1990/91. If anything in 1995, the $20 was still king.
