Hopefully there are some Buffalo nickel 2 feathers experts on here. I have this 1918 that is missing most/all of the third feather but there is something in the "spot" that is not quit the right shape of the third feather, and something just below that. There are heavy polishing lines throughout the coin and specifically in the 3rd feather area. Is what I am seeing the remnants of the third feather or is it clash marks from the reverse? I looked at an over-lay but unless the dies are rotated it didn't seem to line up. Any thoughts? The 1918 2 Feather is apparently one of the rarer ones (give the prices)
Thanks Every-one!

There are still traces of the third feather. The "two feather errors" are just examples of over polished dies where the third and shallowest feather in the die has been polished away. Just a late die stage where the die should have been retired.

there is still a trace of the 3rd. I have seen several TPG graded "2 feather" where there is still a small trace of feather. IMO those that are, we're done so incorrectly. There should be no trace of the 3rd feather to be considered a 2 feather. I have also personally submitted an example that shows even less than yours and still did not receive the designation.

I've seen these referred to loosely as 2-1/2 feather or 2-1/4 feather. Your coin is in fantastic shape, if you were looking to sell, I think you'd find a buyer, even with a little of the 3rd feather showing.

The true 1918 2-feather is ADO-2F-#9 in Pope's guide. It shows no trace of the third feather, and is fairly common below EF.

Your coin may be an earlier stage or could be another die pair. The partially abraded third feather exists in multiple dates and mints in the series. (For example, a similar partially abraded third feather is a key die marker for the 1937-D three-legged variety.)

It's still an interesting coin, and worth a 2x2.
Rest in Peace

I would call it one of those 2 1/2 feather Nickels .
