I'm with @jimmy and the frog: a small hole in the plating has allowed the underlying zinc to deteriorate. Not a RPM.

I agree with all of the above. I predict that in 50 years there with be no post 1982 cents remaining, they will have all fallen victim to the dreaded zinc rot, eating themselves from the inside out. I won't be investing in any of these coins.
