Quote: The finger print may be gone, but look at that loss of luster to the left of the ear and the enhanced scratch at the mouth! Shouldn't have dipped the whole coin.. The area to the left of the ear is actually showing more luster not less. The dark area grew because of reflection to the camera lens. The coin has more luster after the dip not less. If I did not dip the whole coin, there would be a line on the coin where the dip started and stopped.

Here is my 2¢,I mean 50¢ If your intent is to keep it as a collector coin, then you just lost about 30% of the value "as a collector coin". There is no way to know how it will tone in the future because of the cleaning. If your intent is to keep it as a bullion coin then no harm done. John1

There are likely many blast white silver coins in straight graded holders that were expertly dipped decades ago. Although this particular coin is worth close to bullion value anyway, it's much more appealing after removal of the fingerprint, and if anything is probably more valuable than before dipping.

However, if you saw those 2 coins side-by-side in a shop today, would you really be willing to pay 30% more for the one with the fingerprint? I generally prefer a natural-looking coin to a blast white obviously dipped coin, but in this case, I think it is a slight improvement or at worse no impact to value.

I believe there is more luster now than before the dip . The coin is not damaged , it did not lose any value as a BU Kennedy half . I always said a 2-3 second dip followed by a quick rinse with distilled water and properly dried will not hurt a BU Silver coin . But Don't Ever Dip A Circulated Coin !

In a couple years that recently dipped blast white look will fad as the coin gets exposure to its environment. It can be really difficult to tell that natural white BU from a lightly dipped coin unless you know the coin history. As for the value of the coin, it would be interesting to list on ebay the OP example as BU Blast White and another coin as BU Original with light gold toning that came out of the same original coin roll. On ebay it would not surprise me if the blast white sold for more than the original example.

I prefer nicely toned fingerprints on au - unc Franklin half $'s. I've recently acquired a taste for nicely toned finger prints on AU -UNC Franklin half $'s! Seriously, it adds a connection to someone in the past. The guy who once touched it has his identity on that change!!!!! The closest I'll get to time travel!!

Fingerprints like this one are tough to get off. Next time before you dip it try dunking the coin in MS-70. Sometimes it will get the fingerprint off if it has not been on the coin for a while.
