So I went to McDonalds and when I got my change I saw this... I've never seen anything like it. Any ideas?

Post strike damage. Agree, looks like the aftermath of an assault by way of a Philips head screwdriver.

Always show both sides of the coin. You will probably see on the reverse
a raised area where the metal was pushed up.

The reverse will show a big push out from that hit.

Here's the back. I don't think this is valuable or anything, just odd. Thanks for the help.

Wow, who ever done this struck the screwdriver through the quarter on steel and it flattened out the quarter. "Message to all you coins out there: Don't go into the garage! Bad things happen there."

It looks to me like a counter punch. You can see right under the eagle on the reverse how the design is flattened. Its because it was hit in that spot on the obverse. I have a couple counter punched coins that look similar on the reverse. I keep them when I find em. But they arent worth anything, unless maybe you can connect them to a particular store or something from "ye day of olde"... I dont know if I used that correctly, Ive just always wanted to say it. :)

The only reason I dont say screwdriver is because it looks to be the same depth. I would think that a screwdriver would be a deeper punch in the center.. not that it really matters. Its damage either way.. people do some strange things to coins... I have to agree with coop... coins do not.. I REPEAT DO NOT belong in the garage

It probably was at first - doubtful this was "Juniors" first rodeo using Dad's tools to put his mark on coins!

I agree, looks like a Philips-head screwdriver was involved. Post mint damage ( PMD).

Please, next post, you need to crop y our photos much better, pull the edges to the lip of your coin on all sides. If it wasn't for the huge PMD mark, we would not have been able to assist you. Cropping will also make/allow your coin to look a lot larger as well.

to the CCF!

If it were a Philips #3 head it may make a mark like this. #3's don't have a point on them, they are blunt.

The both sides have circulation use, which flattered the highest part.

In my photo you will see that this is not a screwdriver. I thing of some groups who want to identify themselves. This happened a lot.

Damage for the coin because seem the 4 in year to be a little different then the business strike Denver.
