Hi all. This coin was with a lot of others in one of two Whitman Coin Books my work associated has had since high school. My guess is he is about 60 years old. The coins were all in the little round cut-outs more or less by date order, but it seemed that everywhere he didn;t have a correct date he had put a steel penny. He had about a dozen of them over the two books. AS for migration of Zinc, I doubt it, but who knows. The coin is absolutely the color of steel/zinc coinage with the exception of the copper you see in the pictures.
In person, all that area smudged in front of Lincoln's face and elsewhere looks like worn down lamination errors. As for the "feel" of the coin, it's smooth as silk to the touch overall. I will try the 24 hour acetone treatment and see what happens, but I honestly believe it's just an odd planchet or something. That being said, it is just too "damaged" to be very valuable. 3.1 grams, non-magnetic but looks like steel. Strange.
Any other thoughts and ideas are appreciated. I look forward to posting more and reading the Forum.
