Need Help In Date Identification. Lincoln Wheat Cent / LWC 194(?) Something.

Spacegirl Valued Member United States 57 Posts	Posted 03/14/2021 12:30 pm Hi all. I'm hoping there are better eyes and brains out there who will help me try to identify this LWC. I found it in an old high school collection of a friend with all his steel pennies. I noticed it because of all the lamination issues and when I weighed it, turns out it is 3.1 grams. As you can see, there is some copper around the rim. I'm probably spending way too much time on this coin, but it's got me curious. I've done several overlays in photoshop to try and line up dates with 1925, 1943, 1944, 1935, but cannot make a determination. Perhaps it's even a 1950 something. But the color is exactly that of a worn steel penny. The L & I are barely visible in "Liberty" but I do not have the photographic equipment or a coin microscope to show it well. I have a few more pictures if this isn't adequate. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 03/14/2021 12:33 pm Looks like it was painted at one time. Now the paint is wearing off the coin and the copper is showing on the tallest devices and rim area. Just a Wheat cent now. Report this Post to the Staff

Spacegirl Valued Member United States 57 Posts	Posted 03/14/2021 11:04 pm Hi all. This coin was with a lot of others in one of two Whitman Coin Books my work associated has had since high school. My guess is he is about 60 years old. The coins were all in the little round cut-outs more or less by date order, but it seemed that everywhere he didn;t have a correct date he had put a steel penny. He had about a dozen of them over the two books. AS for migration of Zinc, I doubt it, but who knows. The coin is absolutely the color of steel/zinc coinage with the exception of the copper you see in the pictures. In person, all that area smudged in front of Lincoln's face and elsewhere looks like worn down lamination errors. As for the "feel" of the coin, it's smooth as silk to the touch overall. I will try the 24 hour acetone treatment and see what happens, but I honestly believe it's just an odd planchet or something. That being said, it is just too "damaged" to be very valuable. 3.1 grams, non-magnetic but looks like steel. Strange. Any other thoughts and ideas are appreciated.
