Not sure what is going on with this quarter (of course, I am new to this). Looks like more than just regular damage. Any thoughts would be appreciated as I am trying to learn.

There are two things that can happen to a coin, error or damage.
I cannot see how this could occur during the striking of the coin so that leaves damage as the alternative.

Definitively not during the strike. to me seem to be done with a gravel tool, photo of the tool follow:

Second I crop the original image and put the high parts of this to look for. I see the Date, Letters and Mint mark was strike before the zig-zag marks (characteristic of the graving tools).

So must be post strike damage.

Found it in a bank roll. That must have took a long time to do that on the coin...

Not with a Dremel tool.

If I were to guess, I'd say someone used a finning burr in a die grinder on it.

I agree - post mint damage. Nothing in the minting process would/could do this.

As with coop - my first thoughts were Dremel (with small diamond tipped bit).

Could drop it in a 2x2 as an interesting curiosity.

Thanks all. I just thought it looked odd as tight as the marks are. I don't always look to see if there is a premium on coins. At this point in the game, I am looking for things that look different than expected wear and damage and trying to learn what the more experienced folks think. Thanks again.
