Hello everyone.

I am almost a total beginner who has a pile of coins which I am going through and been reading/learning/sorting/etc. over the past 3-4 months or so. This particular coin looks like it has a thin film of something over just a defined (non jagged) are4a of the reverse. Might this be an interesting coin I should keep or just throw back into the "circulation" pile?

Thank you so much for your anticipated responses - including recommendations to just remove this posting.

Looking forward to learning a lot more about coins.

It is definitely a "spender," with oxidation or some other chemical reaction causing the discoloration.

Environmental crud of some sort. May have spent some time partially submerged in unpotable water--or in very close proximity.

Soak it in Simple Green, it will take that crud right out within the hour.

Environmental toning/staining/tarnishing. As mentioned, probably spent time in water/fountain. Spender. Not worth trying to clean up, in my opinion. Worth 25 cents either way.
