I recently picked up this 1838 Capped Bust half dollar. I love the patina on it and the details are quite nice. Still getting into collecting and starting to build up a type set and get them holdered. Anyone have any experience with these types of coins?

I don't know enough about varieties for these,
reverse lettering looks to be rather heavy, but to my eye, is OK.
Unusual patina color, obvious edge bump,
AU-55.

I'm not really seeing any wear on this one, it has a subdued luster/look to it, in the photo, I think one really needs to see it in hand to tell for sure, but to me, from these photos I'd say somewhere between AU55 and MS63. I look to the bust area and the top of the cop on the obverse and the eagles beak plus the leaves on the sprig he is holding, the leaves could have a touch of friction or be slightly under struck. It doesn't appear to me as wear from light circulation but more from old cabinet friction (being slid about on velvet in a coin drawer over the years).

This is a tough one with that toning. At first I was put off by the toning, now I find it a bit intriguing. I'd say AU58-MS62, but that's just a shot in the dark with just these to go on.

I'll say AU-58.

Just a trace of wear on the high points of the hair. I'd say AU-58, but depending on whether there are signs of circulation in the fields beneath the toning, MS-63 wouldn't be surprising.

i was torn between AU58 and MS63. I'm going with MS63 on this one as I really cant find anything that points to circulation. nice coin

It is interesting to read all of the above posts and realize from this, when looking at screen shots,
that toning makes accurate grading a more difficult task.

Apparently, toning can hide fine hairline scratches, and make it more difficult to discern between a light strike and wear on the high points.

Very close to mint state, with just a touch of rub. Looks solid for AU-58. No sign of cleaning and eye appeal is good. The minor rim bump shouldn't hurt the grade. Very nice coin!
