Lim you beat me to it, but I was going to ask:
Is this a real coin in your collection? If so whats the chance of some extra pic for us admiring fans.

As stated by member guest and repeated by many other more experienced collectors than myself in the Aussie Forum...the Mule is primed to go ballistic in the years ahead.

They are averaging around the AUD400.00 to AUD$500+ in recent ebay sales, most of them are around the Fine/VF grade. A fully centered Mule in the EF grade will cost more. Full time dealers like Downies have sold the Mules at AUD1K+. I am not aware whether any premium grade ones have been sold and if so, at what price they have been sold for. We ahve a Forum member here who is quite an authority in the Mules, let's hope he will post in answer to your query.

You have to be very careful when buying these coins from ebay as you will usually end up with a coin of much lower grade than you expected. There are several reasons for this: 1)A lot of the people selling them are non-collectors and don't know what they are talking about, 2) Some unfortunately know better but are quite prepared to overstate the coin's condition to entice bids, and 3) For some reason scans of lower grade $1 coins tend not to show the bagmarks as clearly as you'd expect, thus the image is not a good guide to the grade of the coin. For example, this coin that I have on ebay is only good fine, but when I showed the auction listing to a fellow collector he was convinced that I'd undergraded the coin by a large amount.

Here's my compilations of $1 mule value based on info I have gathered from numerous sources.... from recent sales on ebay, private sales, and public auctions. Grade : Value (AUD$): Fine $300 VF $500 EF $1250 aUNC $5500 UNC $10500 ChUNC $15000 Gem UNC $22000 Note that the Gem Unc is an estimate of current value based on info from recent bidding prices on ebay for an Unc example. And 1-2 yrs ago, it was reported that a Ch Unc specimen exchanged hands at around the $10,000 mark. Also note that a strict Unc specimen is rare and seldom offered for sale, let alone higher grades such as Choice or Gem UNC; which would be regarded as excessively rare. Remember that these $1 coins were inadvertently struck with the wrong obverse die (of 10cent coin). It wasn't long before staff at the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) discovered their mistake and tried to remove as many of these mules before they entered circulation. However between the time that these coins were struck and when the error was detected, quite a few accidentally escaped into circulation. It wasn't until year 2002, that the first specimen became publically known; discovered by fellow numismatists from checking through loose change. Once news broke out of this discovery and published in the Australian Coin and Banknotes (CAB)magazine, a plethora of collectors started to actively search for these mules and so more discoveries surfaced in 2003 and 2004. Bearing this information in mind, one realises that most of these Yr2000 $1 mules would have likely circulated through loose change and poker machines for at least 2-3 years before being plucked out of circulation, supporting the fact that the majority of $1 mules exist in VF or lower grades. One doesn't have to think for long in rationalising why there would only be a handful at most, of these mules in Uncirculated or higher grades; thus supporting the values listed above. quote: Originally posted by lim118

choice to gem unc: $13K a bit under 12 months ago. For reasons I went into earlier I would not trust the grades of most coins sold on ebay. Also you will find that a lot of coins 'correctly' graded have changed hands outside ebay at much higher prices than you quoted. There's one that Nobles are calling about unc in their next auction, it may be worth you going along to have a look.

Thanks for that update PRA, aka "thesandpit" , will amend my catalog value accordingly. As for the $13K, do you know if that was a confirmed sale and was it by private treaty ? Also, can u clarify what grade that mule was (Ch Unc or Gem Unc ?). Also, you wouldn't by any chance have a scan of that coin would you ? quote: Originally posted by thesandpit

it would not be unreasonable to expect the next GEM UNC mule that is offered for sale to fetch maybe over 20 K , as there cant be more than a half a dozen in this grade

When you find a coin in change which costs you a dollar and then onsold for hundreds of dollars, this is always a win win situation.......lol
I find it hard to believe that an error even in high grade will fetch 20k.
Thats just my opinion.
