The Royal Mint- The Royal Mint, the Original Maker of UK coins, has today launched a new range of collectable coins celebrating the iconic British band - The Who. To celebrate the launch of the coin, co-founder and lead singer of The Who, Roger Daltrey, visited The Royal Mint to strike one of the very first coins, giving the band's seal of approval on the new coin and its design.
The Who collectable coin is the fourth in The Royal Mint's 'Music Legends' series, and follows coins in honour of Queen, Elton John and David Bowie. The coin's dynamic design includes some of the most iconic symbols from the band's live and loud performances - including a union flag, Mod logo and speaker-smashing Rickenbacker guitar. Together, the symbols on the coin form a pinball table, a nod to the single Pinball Wizard and album Tommy, one of the band's most famous creations. With the latest colour printing technology, elements of the coin have been digitally printed to showcase the vibrant red, white and blue of the band's emblem.
Using the latest innovative technology and manufacturing techniques, a number of coins will feature a special 'shockwave' effect, radiating from the speaker - elevating the detail of the coin. Designers and craftspeople at the Mint have developed this effect in honour of The Who's record-breaking loud concert - a record that was held for a decade.

If I am going to get one, it will be silver. Even though I am not a real colourized coin fan, I think I would be wrong to not have that version here.
And now I have entered the rabbit hole, because the Queen and Bowie offerings are more appealing to me now than they were before. Because, you know, coins are nicer as sets.
I too am drawn in by the colorized version, but wasn't happy when I checked on the pricing. It's about triple what I'd like to spend for a clad coin/medal. Now, as others have said, if it was colored AND silver it would be a different story.
Yes we all love the classic music of the past - but the issuing of coins celebrating rock bands needs to stop. Queen and Bowie, yes - but Elton John is questionable and the Who in my opinion did not have many great songs. I remember them more for smashing guitars and Moon the Loon than any epic songs.
I mean who is next - the Slade or the Sweet or Gary Glitter. We seem to be finishing up with the "A" grade acts and moving into "B" grade ones.
Expecting torrent of abuse from angry Who fans 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 "Baba O'Reilly was the greatest song ever made, what about Substitute".
Plus the fact they issue all these 2 and 5 kg gold and silver coins now. If it was just standard cupro nickel and silver coins it would be okay - but the pop culture issues are cheapening the hobby.
I can think of many other ones that they could do: Deep Purple, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Moody Blues, The Police, The Kinks, The Clash, Dire Straits, Pretenders, Ozzy/Black Sabbath, Duran Duran, Cream\Yarbirds\Derek & The Dominos, ELO, Yes, Supertramp, Jethro Tull, Bad Company, and so on.
Basically an endless series of coins....
What I don't know if bands would have to be fully British - Fleetwood Mac for example.
