Mark On Kennedy Half Dollars - Coin Community Forum

Many of them have a spot made by a marker (red or black) right in the middle of the ear. I have found too many of them for this to be a one off by a lone collector. ijn1944 Bedrock of the Community United States 19261 Posts	Posted 04/11/2021 12:00 pm Not 100% certain, but I'm thinking a Kennedy searcher has gone through them, marking them as they went. Don't know what the color differentiation means. A few years ago I was going through several rolls of halves and close to 20% of them had a heavy black sharpie mark on them. Some will say the marks are made by servers receiving tips. Not convinced that's the case given that halves aren't that heavily used in day-to-day commerce--especially when the marks were appearing on later 70s/early 80s coins. Numisma Pillar of the Community United States 4963 Posts	Posted 04/11/2021 1:55 pm This is sometimes done by roll hunters in order to avoid searching the same lot twice. I'm guessing the different colors don't mean anything, but were done either by two different searchers or by the same person on different occasions. Report this Post to the Staff
