I've used the description "vanilla" for many years. It's something that is just plain and nothing special. I always use it to describe the 90%+ 1859's that are just vanilla, no sprinkles, no toppings, no nothing.

Gatewest is a pretty big dealer. You would think that they would know exactly what that variety was. Maybe a listing screwup with the photos?

Yes, Gatewest should know what they have when they put a price like that on a coin. What I see from photo is top left part of first 8 may have been tapped at some time. None of the other identifiers like doubling at certain parts of legend or die cracks appear to be on this one.
