Good question @john, but not one that I can answer.
Any more coins or discussion for this decade? Hopefully @j1m can give us the summary in the next day or so and then we might be ready to drop back on Sunday.

There have been two narrowly-dated coins posted, 708 AH and 707 AH; 708 AH is June 1308-June 1309 AD (so majority 1308), 707 AH is July 1307-June 1308 AD (my two sources gave me slightly different specific days, which resulted in different majority assignment). It's possible that we only covered one year in the 1300s: 1308. Of course there's been plenty of other awesome coins posted that aren't dated to a single year. Looking forward to the 1290s! I really should get around to posting some of my unidentified Islamic coins on CCF for identification... |

Ok yes. The summary is that we all have some work to do filling in dated coins of the period 1300 to 1309 AD.  "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Welcome to a new century! I agree that although we had few narrowly dated coins last decade, there was a wealth of diversity (even a squirrel  . So let's see how this century goes. I think my only coin this decade is this gros from the Duchy of Brabant that can be dated between 1294-1300. Witte 319, and Numista #121780   Obv: Shield with lions of Brabant and Limburg Rev: Short cross inside double legends. DVX BRABANTE. +BENEDICTVM : NOMEN : DOMINI NOSTRI SIT Edited by tdziemia

@tdziemia - nice-looking coin, but I think you accidentally posted two pics of the shield side [EDIT: fixed now, yay! I see there's quite a bit of resemblance to the gros tournois, which we've seen in a different thread on this forum recently.] Edited by january1may

Wow! Super coin with nice clear date.
I forgot to point out the two different lions on my coin. The lion with the bent tail is for Brabant, and the lion with the double tail is for Limburg, which came under control of the Dukes of Brabant in 1288. The Limburg lion looks identical to the Bohemia lion as far as I can tell. Maybe there is some history there?

Yes, there is a connection. The Dukes of Limburg used it first, in the early 13th centruy. One of Duke Walram III's sons was Count Henry V of Luxemburg, who later in the 13th century made it Luxemburg's coat of arms (which it still is). His grandson, Henry VII, became king of Bohemia in 1308, and brought the lion with him. Next decade I will join in again. Edited by erafjel

Maybe there was a slightly earlier Luxembourg-Bohemia connection, as this lion is on the Prager groschen attributed to 1300-1305? (...and yes, I guessed you would be the one most likely to take the bait ). |

Then I'm at a loss what the connection might be - perhaps they both thought around the same time that the double tail was a cool feature of their respective lions? |

Here's my Golden Horde sun face. The date range might be even wider. Tokhta Khan Pul, 1291-1312
Solkhat/Qrim. Bronze, 1g. Sun face; Tokhta-bek just khan. Tamga with Batu's house tamga in one direction and Tokhta's tamga (3 prong) in the other / Mint of Solkhat (Lebedev M8a). |

Here is the one dated coin that I have for this decade: a Dirham from the Seljuq of Rum. It is dated AH690 (1291 AD) and was minted at Bayburt (located in modern-day Turkey) for Mas'ud II. I have attributed it as Album 1234.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."
