A brief appearance from me. Edward the Confessor Expanding Cross Heavy Issue Penny, 1050-1053
London. Silver, 1.71g. Diademed and draped bust left, trefoil-tipped sceptre before; + EDŽE: RD REX :. Expanding cross; + LEOFRED ON LVNDENE (S 1177). |

Yikes that Penny is an absolute beauty @john! The detail is amazing. Only one coin for me from this decade: a Follis from the Byzantine Empire. It was minted in Constantinople between 1059 and 1067 AD. The obv legend is EMMA NOVHA while the rev legend is +KWN + Δ K EVΔ KAYΓO. I have attributed it as SBV 1853. I agree that penny is stunning. I assume that is one of the centerpieces of your collection? I've got only this homely Polish denar of Boleslaw II. I sometime see this coin attributed narrowly to an emission of the 1070s, but equally often just broadly to his entire reign, 1058-1080.   Obverse legend BOLEZLAVS |

Ok last call for this decade. Starting tomorrow am we can drop back to coins minted starting in the 1040s.

This will not move the thread. 1046-60 Hungarian Denar under King Andreas I;Huszar 9,Unger 5,CAC Vol. I/4.4/a9.1/81. It has a sigla of two points in each of the quadrants of the inner circle and one point under "REX". It is the only sigla variation I have out of 250.  |

I also only have one coin to post for this decade and unfortunately the spread is more than 10 years just like that one posted by @ed. I'm quite sure that the 1040s are my first decade hole.  This Pfennig from Hungary was minted between 1046 and 1060 AD. The obv legend is +REX ANDREAS and the rev legend is slightly degraded, but reads something like +RE7IACIVITVS. I have attributed it as Frynas H.4.1 and Huszar 8.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

The type of coin I posted is the first type of Hungarian coins with a sigla. If there is a way to find out what the purpose was it would be in this time frame. I think it was a control mechanism and a precursor to mint marks.

OK I don't have my own pic of this yet because I just bought it today but here goes. Edward the Confessor AR Penny 1046 - 1048, London (Goltsige), 18.3mm, 1.16g, North 817, Seaby 1174. OBV: +EDPER - DR(EX?), diademed and draped bust left, sceptre before. REV: + GOLTSGE ON LVND, short voided cross within, a quadrilateral with three dots at the ends and one at the center. Thanks John! Yes the seller had pretty minimal info on their listing. I have already noted alot of attribution info that was missing. I will be sure to update the date when I get it in my collection.
