Do they still make patterns or equivalents that still get into public hands or no modern 1950 and up ones?

Thanks for this great post! The Buffalo struck in copper is amazing.
Today is the last day of the month and I just checked my wallet and it's empty so maybe I can sell it for $10800 like that leather holder?

That's a great question, and sadly none that I am aware of. Even if they did the price would be so exorbitant no mere mortal could afford them.

There were some former US Mint engraver, Frank Gasparo, items that come up around 2009 but his daughter decided to donate them all to the National Collection for all to enjoy.

In 1999 there were some trial pieces that were inadvertently released of the Marsha Washington dollar.

As outside contractors were given some of these it is possible and probable that they still exist outside of the mint in a "clandestine" area.

The Sacagawea "Cheerios" Dollar patterns have come to light as well, though never officially released either.

But NO is the answer to "Can I purchase current patterns somewhere official?"

There have been a few outside unofficial vendors that have made patterns like the Gallery Mint or Carr's Midnight Mint some of the pieces that they produced were in the running to become a new official US Coin design, but never did.

The area of U.S. Pattern coins is my guilty pleasure, though I can't really afford to play in the game

@westcoin, I agree with you there! There's a small dealer in the Houston area I got to know well over the years who specialized in patterns. I loved looking at his inventory, but the expense of building a pattern collection was just too high...
