ironhorse Valued Member Canada 363 Posts	Posted 10/06/2021 6:03 pm Hey hey diggers! (and all my collecting friends!) Well here we are in the middle of harvest season and the crops are coming out of the fields at a pretty steady rate. I got a chance to get back to an older site I hunted a few years back with decent results and it's been a couple of years since I've been down there and the plough has gone through a couple of times so there was a chance things got tossed around out there in the ground and I might get a shot at a few targets I missed in the past. Great conditions as the field was just seeded for a cover crop and signals were few but I did get a few chances at something good. Feeling the spot was hunted out I decided to head for the car and on the way at the edge of the site I got a great coin tone...I was right it was and a good one too! The sheaf of wheat token is about as rare as they come in the token world so I'm happy to have this one. Not in great condition but easily identified and not as bad as some other coppers I've found. It's not very often these gems pop out so I'm pretty happy to have this one! Until next time...the rare ones are out there!! ironhorse Valued Member Canada 363 Posts	Posted 10/07/2021 06:29 am thanks for your responses guys! @daltonista...I'm not too sure if there could be any further conservation to this piece. My experience with dug coins over the past thirty years tells me that unfortunately this is about as good as it's going to be from now on. It will always be detailed due to heavy corrosion from the ground. Sadly in this case, all remaining detail remains mostly in the surface patina...remove that and you remove the visible detail left in the devices. I'm happy to leave it the way it is for now knowing that fooling with it further will only destroy it. Please keep in mind that I had to remove dirt and corrosion already ( via a soak in hydrogen peroxide which removes dirt etc but preserves patina) and for photograph purposes a thin coat of Renaissance wax to remove the dry look h2o2 leaves. However, my methods may not be the end all here...I would be happy to get another perspective on preservation from other collectors. Report this Post to the Staff

I think it's the soil condition and heat. Anyway, you made the right decision not to try and conserve. I did try removing the heavy patina on some old pennies and yes, the detail was only in the patina so removing the patina removes the detail. Nice finds! Report this Post to the Staff
