Time for a trivia question:

QUESTION:
Who appears on more not-intended-for-circulation (NIFC) classic era US commemorative coins than anyone else? (I'm asking about actual people, not allegorical figures such as Liberty, and am counting by design types, not individual date/mint marks.)

ANSWER:
In the "almost, but not quite" category we find a group of individuals who made two appearances on a classic US commemorative coin:

- Marquis de Lafayette: obverse and reverse of the 1900 Lafayette Dollar - (2)
- George Washington: obverse of 1900 Lafayette Dollar, obverse of 1926 American Independence Sesquicentennial half dollar - (1+1 = 2)
- William McKinley: Obverse of 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition gold $1, obverse of 1916-17 McKinley Birthplace Memorial gold $1 - (1+1 = 2)
- Ulysses S. Grant: obverse of 1922 Birth Centenary (silver half dollar), obverse of 1922 Birth Centenary (gold $1) - (1+1 = 2)
- Robert E. Lee: obverse of 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial half dollar, obverse of 1937 Battle of Antietam half dollar - (1+1 = 2)
- Booker T. Washington: obverse of 1946-51 BTW Memorial half dollar, obverse of 1951-54 Washington-Carver half dollar - (1+1 = 2)

The correct answer, however, is Daniel Boone with a total of four appearances. He appeared on:

- Obverse and Reverse of 1921 Missouri Statehood Centennial half dollar (2)
- Obverse and Reverse of 1934-38 Daniel Boone Birth Bicentennial half dollar (2)

1921 Missouri Statehood Centennial

@kanga: Nope, I was only asking about distinct design types, not annual issues. (I included a note about it in the question above.)

My initial reaction was Lee. Then I realized he was not on the Gettysburg, it was just a soldier.
