Guessing this is damage from an acidic environment. Perhaps buried at one time.

Agree. Not a mint defect. It's post-strike damage encountered after it entered circulation--if coins could talk.

I agree with the Frog, acidic conditions possibly from being buried in soil. Definitely post mint damage.
