The more I think about this, I would suggest getting ebay to cancel the transaction on the basis that the seller used stock photos stolen from someone else, and that the sale is likely fraudulent. It's probably easier for ebay to make you whole before the seller sees the money, rather than them trying to recover money from the seller down the line. Of course, if you still want to take your chances of getting a good deal, that's up to you....

To accuse someone of having stolen something from someone else you have to have evidence. What is that evidence?

He's using images that are available at multiple sites online. What are the chances that he actually owns this coin and is selling it at auction on ebay? I'm not say he should be formally charged with intellectual property theft, but just take action now in order to avoid a mess down the line. Otherwise, I don't see this ending well for you. But again, your call.

I get what you're saying. I did contact ebay and communicated my concerns. I don't know if that will do anything, but we'll see. If the seller doesn't send the item I will make a claim to ebay and if that doesn't work for some strange reason, I can make a claim to the credit card company as a fraudulent transaction. Anyone experienced anything similar where you weren't able to recover your purchase amount?
Rest in Peace

I honestly hope you receive the coin and can be verified AU-58 straight . When I look at the price you paid ,I cringe , I am in no way up to your level of purchasing coins . Good luck !

After hearing what others have stated I would immediately cancel the payment on this.

NS, there are a lot of red flags on this transaction: hijacked photos, zero feedback as a seller, the account appears to have been inactive for the past 90 days until the coin was sold. I buy and sell both on ebay, but I have never had to deal with ebay on a fraud seller or buyer. I truly hope the coin in the listing arrives as advertised. Keep us posted.

I sent a message to the seller asking for photos of the coin on a piece of paper with a number written on it and he sent the following:

Scam-Averted:-1921-D-50c-Walking-Liberty-Half-Dollar
Scam-Averted:-1921-D-50c-Walking-Liberty-Half-Dollar

I compared the photos of the listing and the coin he claimed to have in hand and concluded that they were not the same coin. I then asked him why the pictures he sent did not seem to match the coin in the listing. Waiting for his response.

Having him take a picture with the number was a great idea!

I agree, these coins are two different coins. It was not only unfair for you to not get the represented coin, but unwise on his part. Especially with this amount of money tied up.

I notice on the new photos of the coin, there seems to be vertical hairlines on the obverse. The mintmark is also very low in placement compared to the first coin. Hopefully this coin is genuine, but I have my doubts.

The 2 is wrong in the second coin image. Probably a coin direct from the forty thieves web site. Nefarius intent is obvious.

Great idea asking him to send those pics. Clearly not the same coin with lots of differences, especially the rims, the date, and the mint mark position (is that even a D?). The coin he's planning to send is obviously fake, and you now have proof in the ebay system that he's not sending the coin advertised. Since he hasn't shipped it yet, it still might not be too late for ebay or the seller to cancel the transaction.

gotta agree with everyone in the fact it is not the same coin.

as jacrispies noted the MM is not in the correct location and the 2 in the date is not correct. I call counterfeit. this deception was on purpose by the seller.

After I emailed the seller my questions about the differences in the listing coin and the photos he had sent, he did not reply to my questions but asked ebay to cancel the transaction which ebay just informed me about. Looks like his hustle flopped. Thanks to everyone for your kind help.

Glad you got out of that unscathed. I'll bet he was hoping for an unwitting buyer.
