Sold as "JUDAEA Roman Administration Tiberius with Julia Augusta 14-37 AD Prutah" My research shows that IF it is real it's a prutah of Procurator Valerius Gratus, probably 15/16 AD But there are problems... The condition is very good. Is it too good? The Obverse should read IOY ΛIA ('Julia') but appears to read IOY AIΛ I've looked on Dr. Ilya Prokopov's Fake Ancient Coin Reports and cannot see anything like it on the 'Fake Ancient Judaean Coins' page. Weight: 2.9 grams Diam: 14-18mm Thickness: 2mm

Retrograde lettering on these is not uncommon, I believe. So, I wouldn't have concerns about the "AIΛ". However, it's a bit heavy at 2.9 g., assuming the weight you provide is accurate. But maybe not unreasonably heavy? I'm going to see if louisvillekyshop can chime in to offer an opinion. He's handled a lot of Judaean coins and has even been in touch with David Hendin from time to time.

At that weight it could be a 4 prutah.

That helps a lot! Thank you both. Very helpful. I like it too. I also wondered if the retrograde lettering wouldn't have happened if it was fake. I've got another one - Bar Kokhba - which I've got some question marks about so I'll post that too in a day or two. Thanks again!

I think you might start just posting the listings you bought the coin from. Here is this one if that helps. The pictures that came with the coin were important to look over as well. Now to be honest that very smooth surface around the letter B is kind of odd as most ancient Jewish coins are quite a mess with encrustation and when over cleaned famously decay so you are often better off leaving them as is. The ore they used seemed to me always to have an issue. So that surface now that I see his photos is an issue for me. You just don't see the raised letter with a smooth surface and no corrosion like that. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JUDAEA-R...304046745206

Oh dear, it gets worse! Well, I suppose this is how I learn. So the verdict on this one above (not the Bar Kokhba) is dubious, in the end...?
I thought with over 2000 sales, "est 2005" and no negative reports, piece of history would be legit.
At that time I didn't know about your list. Essential reference in future!
