Who has a digital microscope with camera? How much does it cost? Is it easy to make good coin photos with it? I am about to give up on my Kodak Easyshare C763 camera simply because I can't get it focus clearly. I don't want to spend $800 for a quality Nikon camera. Maybe a microscope would be advisable. Any comments?

Hi: Check out the Big-C you may want to do a search on this site about them.. they sell a product called the Dino-lite ( I think that is what it is called. They are not cheap but people seem to be happy with them.

Hi, I have both a decent Nikon dSLR w/macro lens, and a cheap digital microscope (DigitalBlue QX5). For the closeup work I do, both provide slightly different results (below), but in terms of cost-effectiveness you cannot beat a $80 QX5 over my $1000+ Nikon setup. The QX5 has less control over the digital captures, but it's still quite good on general detail. The major downside is you cannot zoom out far enough to capture the whole coin. Here is a comparison between my Nikon D70S and the QX5 on the same coin detail, used here in an overdate analysis. Nikon D70S with Nikkor 60mm macro lens: QX5:

Great pic, Kurt. I wonder what else that digital microscope can be used on...

Big-byte I use an easy share c743 and though sometimes the pictures I take are blurry.... that's more my unsteadiness than the camera. For really close detail I just hold a magnifying glass over the lens and use macro and take the picture. I mean I realize that sounds weird but it works and you wouldn't have to spend anymore than maybe 10 bucks or so for a 10x magnifier. I get some pretty decent pics that way.

Just a heads up tho, digital blue products (QX5 and Smithsonian scopes) are not yet compatable with windows vista, so don't buy yet if you have or are going to get vista. Customer Service said they are working on it, but didn't know when a workaround would be available.

As far as I know Digital Blue has a Vista patch; you just have to email them for it. I've heard (seen?) people talk about it.

I think I am partially wrong now that you say that. I have 64-bit Vista, and it doesn't detect the driver software on hte disc, or something. If there is a different Vista I think it has a patch. I will call again tommorrow to make sure tho.

I have one of those cheapie 200x digital microscopes sold on ebay (about $60 US). It takes decent photos, though it requires patience. You often have to manually adjust it to get good shots, and play around with lighting... It takes the best photos during daylight :) For $60, you get what you pay for.

I forgot to add a few samples: These shots are the best of my best, and took me many attempts (The one on the bottom was taken with daylight The other two were at night). I rarely get shots this good.. though I don't use my microscope very often either.

I just bought an Intel QX3 and I cannot use it on VISTA or LINIX on my other PC. If anyone knows where to get the drivers for stuff like this. Please help!

Yeah, I have a second hard drive in my spare PC with XP on it. I guess I'll have to mess with BIOS and hook up the ribbon cable just to use the microscope. LOL! Just another thing to add to my list of things to do.

Thank you Southern Yankee, I shall give it a try now. I'll edit with results. Late edit: NO LUCK ... I think switching Hard Drive over to XP is my only hope. Southern Yankee thanks for trying though, that is GREATLY APPRECIATED!
