Another luigino from me (or perhaps it is a luisina ). Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orleans, Dombes 1665, 1/12 ecu. Many of the luigino "copies" are quite nice looking. This one from the small principality of Dombes in eastern France in turn became the prototype of several Italian luigini, with portraits similar to that of the fair Anne-Marie-Louise - but heavily debased and nowhere near the nominal 0.917 silver content.

A very nice one @t360, nice colors too! From me today a particularly lovely louis d'or, in my eyes. Goes by the nickname "Mirliton," originally the name of a women's bonnet which was à la mode in 1723 and which presumably had some likeness with the palm branches on the coin. Since then Mirliton has taken on a number of different meanings, including a French pastry, a kind of flute, and in Louisiana, the name of a certain vegetable - just to name a few. A versatile word. Louis XV, France 1723, louis d'or, Orleans (R).

Wow that's a beautiful mirliton! I've come close to getting one but never bid high enough, so it's still in my want list.

Here's a younger portrait of Louis XVI. I think if you told most Americans it was George Washington they would believe you.

Nice 5 franc, @NumisRob! Louis XVI is a handsome fellow on that 1791 (½?) ecu with the 1774 portrait, @t360. On the sols, he is a bit more rounded. The cow on the Bearn ecu is handsome too, @Dorado! Louis XVIII, France 1814, 20 francs, Paris (A). After Napoleon's abdication in 1814, Louis XVIII ascended the French throne. He was the brother of the unfortunate Louis XVI who was executed during the French revolution. This first coin design was made in haste, during the king's travel to Paris from his exile in England. It was generally considered less attractive, not least by the king himself. It was later replaced by the design shown on NumisRob's coin a few days back. Note: Louis XVIII is widely regarded as the last French king by that name. Technically though, he was not the last - Louis XIX, heir apparent 1824-30, reigned for about 20 minutes in 1830 after his father's, Charles X, abdication, before he himself abdicated. The July revolution of 1830, greatly displeased with Charles, would not have accepted Louis as the next king. He was however by quite a few considered as the true heir to the throne until his death in 1844. Louis Alphonse de Bourbon, one of the current pretenders to the French throne, should France ever decide to become a monarchy again, therefor calls himself Louis XX.
