What is going on with the '5' in the date?

Are we sure the mark by the stars is a scratch? It looks raised in the photo. If so then maybe it's a die gouge. The top of the 5 also appears to have a raised irregularity that might be from die damage.
It's a beautiful coin otherwise with great eye appeal. If the mark is as-struck then MS-66 seems fair. Otherwise it could be net-graded to 63 or so, or be condemned to details status.

MS65 is my grade. PCGS grade might be MS64

your 85(P) should be a little better with the strike. the breast is a little weak for the year. luster appears broken across the cheek. minor scuff and light marks across the profile and K4 area has a light scratch. nice peripheral toning however over the years expect it to darken considerably. reverse has nice luster and looks unbroken. the toning is pleasing adding to eye appeal MS64 if the luster across the cheek is not broken then MS65 westernsky - imo there is no way this coin detailed for those minor marks or the scratch. if it did then I to you for your assessment

Quote: MS 65 for me as well, but PCGS gave it a 67 (is my guess)

I am at 64. My guess PCGS puts the coin at AU58 given the scratch, and hit on the 5. The coin may have gone through a coin counter. I remember seeing a 1878 CC Morgan at a Lake Tahoe Casino in 1969 that was so beat up from the $1 slots that I did not keep the coin.

Unsure what they graded it. I've studied it for a while and don't think it is any lower than MS65. 64s tend to have more scratches, NGC would probably grade this MS65+ . Got my popcorn ready for the reveal that is going to perturb us all.

65+ is my guess . The obverse focal area is sharp and devoid of marks . Coin has an attractive original appearance . The mark at the Stars obverse 4 to 5 o'clock detracts only slightly . In hand I am sure this looks even nicer .

I will guess 64+. Some obverse and reverse marks, makes this one just below a gem. A nice eye appealing coin!

MS-64 +. Good eye appeal for strike but some marks that doesn't allow a 65.

I'm gonna be that guy who says they somehow called a rub and slid this down to AU58 :P
