Commems Collection Classic: Quick Bits #53 - Norfolk Controversy

I've previously posted about the hat that appears on the 1936 Norfolk, VA Bicentennial / Tricentennial Half Dollar - the "hat" in question is actually the British Crown that is found atop the Royal Mace that was given to Norfolk in 1653. (Link Below.)

At the time of the coin's issue, the inclusion of the British Crown did stir up a bit of controversy due to it being a symbol of the British Monarchy. To combat the negative impact of such controversy on the sale of its coin, the Norfolk Advertising Board (the sponsor of the coin) took out a full-page advertisement in the American Numismatic Association's The Numismatist magazine:

Thanks, commems, this is very interesting.

As an aside, while I feel the design of the Norfolk commemorative is fairly busy and cluttered with all the text on both the obverse and reverse, I've always been somewhat intrigued by it and found it quite attractive in ways.
