Hello Folks. I was stunned to get this coin in change from a local store. I think it is the large letter variety but it is hard to tell due the wear on the "AM". Can the members here confirm the variety please?

With the "am" in america mostly worn away I'm not sure if you can tell. Still one heck of a find in circulation!
I've been collecting for a couple years... Favorite Coin's are Standing Liberty quarters, Working on my type set | Coffee, Corvettes, Coins & the CCF what could be better?

I gotta go back to that store and see if there is any other change in the till. Wonder if an old collector put this back into circulation to spark a youths interest?

Quote: Wonder if an old collector put this back into circulation to spark a youths interest? That's a possibility. I occasionally put things like heavily worn Indian cents, circulated steel cents, dateless Buffalo nickels, cull Shield nickels, and the like into circulation, for just the reason you mentioned. I probably wouldn't have done that with this one, however! I had a scratched and heavily worn large cent which I dropped into a tip jar once; I wanted to stick around and see what the youngster behind the counter thought when they found that one .

Is this the 1858/7 overdate? I think I see something going on there. Heck of a change find!

I was so elated finding this in the wild that I didn't even consider looking for the overdate. I will have to take a better closeup of the date and see what you think. I will post the closeup tomorrow. One more thing, I don't understand how the devices can have VG-10 detail, a full undamaged rim and yet the lettering is so worn. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, I am not seeing the overdate under my microscope. That would have been too much to hope for! I'm just happy to have found this in any condition in the wild.

Too worn to see if it has the broken wing and there is no die chip above the first "8", so even more doubtful of the overdate but thanks for reminding me to check it out!

I was also curious about the wear on the legend. Maybe a weak strike? And, regardless of whether it is an overdate or not, this is an amazing find from circulation!

With both right side weak strike, might be a tapered planchet. Should weigh 4.67 g.

I don't suppose your going back to that store and telling them they just gave you about a $25 coin for a Cent?
