Marvin Tameanko, in his book "Monumental Coins", outlines the considerable debate in numismatic circles as to exactly what the structures on these coins are, and what inspiration they may have had from and towards other architectural structures. He makes the case that these "funeral pyres" are actually mausoleums, based on the design of the original Mausoleum (the tomb of Mausalos in Halicarnassus), one of the Seven Wonders. As evidence, he notes that many of these "funeral pyres" clearly depict doors - as is the case of the OP's coin in this thread.

So funeral pyres and wedding cakes for example are both based on Buildings then. (There is a readers digest link below for the cakes.)

The 18th century tiered wedding cake was based on a church in London. Thanks SAP!

Interesting. Wonder where jelly-filled donuts fit in.

Sap;

Worked all day and just understood what you were saying. These images were never meant to be funeral pyres just a mausoleum so an actual building. Indeed having the quadriga on top does not suggest the thing was even meant to burn. But do these emperors who have this image on their divus denarius coins all have records of such structures made for them? So were they ever patterned after the actual tombs of the men?

Ancient mausoleums and wedding cakes may be related in that both demonstrate the principle that stepped towers are inherently more stable.
