If this is fake, it would have fooled me. Every diagnostic is there on authentic examples. It may have been cleaned and slightly circulated, but my vote is REAL!! Definitely needs to be authenticated/certified though.

Is it the lighting or are the denticles in the upper left of the REV more dot-like than they should be? The E's also do look a bit weird. They match the general look, but there almost looks to be too much of an overlap on the tips of the Es' center device at their ends. The inside curve of the 6 also looks a bit misshapen, but again, it could all be in the pics and angles.
An overlay would probably tell, or what I call a line analysis, but I don't presently have the time to do them or I would. :(
A very good fake if it is one.

On review, I believe this is probably genuine. My apologies.

I've looked at it for two days and I just can't find anything wrong with it. I'm with Red, I think it's genuine.

Well if it's a fake it would've fooled me. I'm calling this one genuine. I'm very interested to see how it comes back since if this is a fake it's one of if not the best I've seen.

Get it authenticated by PCGS (not NGC). NGC does not recognize the 1856 IHC is anything but proof. Apparently they don't believe Snow. PCGS will grade them as business strikes (MS) if that's the way the coin is. Mine is an S-3 (not a proof) and therefore graded MS-62.

This has been a superb educational thread. I have learned so much from this fine community. This link of the diagnostics for this issue is fantastic. While I will probably never use it to assess another 1856, it will certainly be handy as I pursue the 1857 S-2. Sorry to get slightly off topic but this link is required learning. I'm changing my opinion on the basis of new photos to 90% genuine and 10 fake. Looks pretty darn good to me. The issue I think might be addressed before PCGS is the potential PVC damage, the little green spots on the coin, some conservation with acetone may help, though if those spots are hardened then nothing will likely change. Acetone only if you are comfortable doing so, I would hate to see this detail for that reason alone. A detail grade wipes out so much value, though you may be able to buy it cheaper that way from the dealers selling it. Looking forward to seeing this post updated as a genuine coin!

This is a Proof Strike, that has been circulated slightly and possibly cleaned. I say proof as most 1856 FECs have a small die chip underneath the top part of the N in CENT. It is evident here. The S-3 MS examples do not have this die chip, therefore it won't be designated as a circulation strike.
My guess it comes back genuine PF AU Details.
