Idea! in your original post you said they have been in the mason jar for 70 years. maybe more? like 74 maybe? maybe original depositor died, or maybe just fell on hard times and couldn't deposit anymore into the jar... Until 16 years later...or somebody else started saving them too. Ask him what he wants for them! let him tell you! Be fair and tell him he's got a lot of commons, but does have a few better coins.

Even if they are all G-4 it looks like it may get a little spendy for you. If you can get a grey sheet and maybe split the difference between the bid and ask prices, or something along those lines for the key and semi keys, and 3 cents apiece for the rest.

There's a lot of ways you could go about it. I suggest you offer as much as you honestly can but explain that if he took the time to sell them individually he might be able to make a bit more. If they were my cents I had laying around and someone offered me in the $200 range I'd probably be pretty happy and surprised.

The keys alone are worth $400-500 at retail. Then you have probably another $100 in the more common dates. One hard part is that you are going to have a lot of commons left with no easy way to sell them profitably. I'd shoot for paying half retail - maybe $200-300? Nice find - what a fun time - looking through a bunch of pennies and seeing that 1909-S pop up! Then finding another! And a 14-D. Wow. Wish it were me  - how did you come upon this opportunity? Ken |

I would think $200 - 300 would be fair. You could also ask him to name a price, and if he comes in low, offer your higher price to show that you are willing to be fair.

I was helping my buddy move from DC to Connecticut last weekend and on the drive down his father saw that I was reading a coin book and told me about the cents. Well I called and said I'd like to offer him 325 for the whole collection and we was thrilled... I'm going to take a ride up to his house this weekend and I'll pick them up then. He also has 2 of every S proof set from 1968-2004 that he said he doesn't want anymore. The fun continues |

I guess we should all walk around with coin books in our hands, etc. I for one, will keep coin books in my office so others will see/know I'm a collector and maybe I will get as lucky as photoeric21.
