Agree, post-strike damage. Coin didn't leave the striking chamber in that condition.

It looks like it has taken a hit displacing the metal.
Whatever caused it, it didn't happen during the striking of the coin.

Is there something on the coin like glue, that would make it appear to be raised? I ask that because that area is not often affected on the die like what what we are seeing on your coin. If only one example is found, it could be an altered coin. If it were a die chip, there would be many other examples out there. This is the first time seeing this, thus my first question.

I saw an alien movie one time that looked like this coin ; Scared the heck out of me with all kinds of stuff hanging out of it's mouth .
BTW it's just PMD .
