My initial reaction is a flattened blob of crud. Is that feature raised, or recessed?

It's recessed. Lincolns entire face is caved in.

I cant seem to see the outline of Lincoln's chin, nose, or eye. I wonder if that is dirty zinc showing and the copper plating has been removed.

If recessed, then that's most likely exposed zinc core--which appears to show early signs of zinc rot.

My first thought was zinc rot. If it's a blob of something it's certainly post mint damage, otherwise it's exposed zinc core with zinc rot growing. Either way, it's not good.
