I have never bought anything I haven't identified beforehand. However, on occasion, I have bought notes on ebay that were mis-identified by the seller. In such cases, I turn to either my SCWPM (Standard Catalogue of World Paper Money) or for later issues, the banknote museum:
http://www.banknote.ws/COLLECTION/c.../PNG/PNG.htm

Another decent source of info is Numista
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/in...?ct=banknote

or the Banknote Index:
https://banknoteindex.com/

& once you have the P-# you can always search ebay for prices. I would take the ebay BIN (Buy It Now) prices with a grain of salt. It's better to find what the notes sold at auction. The SCWPM has BV for notes in UNC but I look upon the figures as approximate values & update them regularly since they were dated the moment the catalogue was published.
