for a 70yr old person, you are pretty funny. (BTW - you are only 10 years older than me) we are in the same pre-technology row boat. I suppose I'll take my nap now and wait for tomorrow.

Each note weighs approx. 1.5 grams of 23k, 99.2% pure gold for a total of 45grams, 1 ½ oz., approx. value melted down on today's market of $2000 USD"

What this tells me is that they are selling below spot and below even the exchange rate. Doesn't read like its a good investment.

If there is really that much gold, why are they not being melted down? It would be really simple to sell them to a refiner for the gold value. Something doesn't make sense here. As far as Forex value, perhaps the countries of origin will not accept them anymore?

I'm awfully sorry guys but I just can't figure it out. I've tried and tried but just can't make it work. It's too confusing for me even when I try to use the tutorials. I'm just not capable of understanding how to get the pictures from my camera to the site. I give up. But thanks for all your help, I appreciate it.

If it's any easier for you, you can try the old Image Optimizer (officially deprecated, but AFAICT still working). The other one has a lot of options that aren't really useful for picture cropping.

EDIT: note that other people have reported that the old optimizer doesn't work. It works for me (and I much prefer it over the new version, at least for being far less confusing), but I cannot guarantee that it would work for anyone else.

@Garbanzo, there are plenty of pics on the internet of these sets for those who want to get a glance at them in the meantime. If you've not been a regular computer user, this stuff can be a little overwhelming. I started working with computers around 1977, yet my eldest grandson (not quite 16) seems to be more capable than I am already, especially on the newest technologies that weren't around when I retired!

@hfjacinto - that information you quoted is from a seller's listing, and I don't believe the metal content information is accurate. Most descriptions I've seen of the sets remark that the notes are of gold and silver foil. I don't know anything about silver foil, but gold foil is incredibly thin; while it is much thicker than gold leaf, it would still be a very small fraction of a gram of gold for a note that size. And, I don't see in any of the images of the documentation that came with the sets what the proportion of silver to gold is.

As most of the sales of these sets I've found are less than $500 (some far less than that), that just wouldn't make sense if it contained 1-1/2 ounces of gold. There are enough of these sets out there that I have a hard time believing the auction prices wouldn't be more in line with the actual bullion value (or legal tender value, for that matter, if these were actually easy to convert to dollars at a currency exchange).

@Hokie, you are correct, the weight and sale price don't make sense to me. As I can't find the actual weight I am assuming its much less than I quoted above. But that still doesn't explain the foreign exchange as 100 Eastern Caribbean dollars does equal $37, so all 30 are worth $1,110.

EDIT1: APMEX has the actual weight, each has 1/1000 of a troy ounce so each has about $1.80 in gold.

@garbanzo, if you want I can message you, you can reply back with the picture and I'll resize them for you and email them back.

I also think the new and the old optimizer suck. Use Irfan View.

https://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm

When you open up any photo file, you can Image>resize (I usually do X by 1200 or 1200 by X) and Save As. In the save as File, there is an option for MAX photosize, I set it to 299KB and never have any issue with uploads.

Thanks, hfjacinto, I looked at APMEX but didn't see it there!

The pages in the sets only says they are "Official Legal Tender of Antigua and Barbuda".

I guess the question is if any currency exchange would actually accept these in exchange for dollars; my guess (again, referencing the auction prices) would be no, or otherwise there would be a rush on these low-priced sets, thus driving the prices up.

@hokie, these maybe like the Marshall Islands $5 coins in which they are actually worth $5, but you can only exchange them on the island.

Again, I don't know. Considering the price they sell for, they are more like an overpriced collectible.

Agreed...
Now, if I happened to be planning a trip to Antigua and Barbuda, maybe I'd think about buying 10 or 12 sets...

I'm too frustrated with this problem to deal with it anymore. If anyone wants to see pictures and learn more about them they can look them up on the internet. I know that this statement can make it look like I'm just bull shi..ing you. But it is what it is. I have found out how to reduce the size on my Picasa system but when I try to bring the size down to below 300kb it makes the pictures too small and then when I try to enlarge them to actually see them full size on the site they lose definition and you get no good details. This collection is the most complete one that there could possibly be, because not only do I have the thirty banknotes in their original folders in perfect condition, every sales communication that came with each one, but I have some extra folders, plastic display envelopes, a touch up pen for any scratches on the folders (which there are none), the original sales literature folder and the bonus gilded frame picture.. Like I said before, I GIVE UP.. For now.. I may try again in the future, but no more for now thank you.
I suppose that I could take hfjancinto on his offer to email some photos to him and have him do the reductions for me. But he mentioned messaging and I don't do that. I email. I don't like to depend on having others do things for me that I should be able to do myself. How would I get in touch with him anyway? I don't want to give out my email to the whole world. Enough is enough, I'm done with it for now.

@Garbanzo,

Can you change your options to allow email. You currently aren't accepting email, so to your Profile and select yes allow other members to message me. I'll message you with my email and you can send the pictures to me. I'll resize them and either post them or email them back. They will be real size (not small).

Select Tools>Manage your Profile> Select Allow Forum Member to Send you email to YES and I'll email you.
