This coin put me many questions about the transition. So I talk with someone who work at the mint and retried on the QC and resource department. In that time they test, like today the changes of planchet alloy with previous dies in order to establish if can work on the new production. They test the dies reaction on 5k, 10K and 20K strikes. Then after they deiced if is continous or change the hub design to accommodate the new alloy.
In this case, not confirmed (I can not have access to internal Mint notes) probably 20 to 50K coins was struck with the older hub design and do not pass the requirements. the coin was release in circulation so hard to say how many are around.
It is just efficiency production.
the rarest on this year it is the new hub design on silver planchet. Enough for now.

I want say thank you to all of you, your opinions and knowledge are valued. What an knowledgeable group! BUT WAIT, I still have questions. The quarter with the possible fire damage, I need to question the indent on the reverse the eagles beak. The bulge on head is opposite on reverse indent and the U & E in the indent all still in intact. Wouldn't the lettes melt with fire damage? And final ? (since I am still learning and I don't really understand your comments are saying they are of value or not), do either one of these coins worthy of keeping, grading or are they just spenders? I've only been doing it since November last year. And, let it be known it was a total fluke that I picked up the quarter Sil pointed out from my pile of 1965 coins. Just to use a a comparison coin. I have a knack for that like my 1983 parking lot penny! (See other posts.)

Forgot the fire damage, was not. Second your coin is not needler yet listed as variety. This will be the first one, Rocky will help. I have but never list because I keep for my book. Do not send yet, and before send ask me where to send.
Been the first one if you want to sell, I will direct you to proper channel.
I have no idea why I do this. I am happy for your discovery.

This thread is becoming confusing. I still just see a coin that has had heat damage.b

Wrekkdd, you're right it has become confusing since the heat damaged coin doesn't make a difference anymore. It's the the other coin that I used to compare it with also from 1965 that caught SIL's sharp eye that has become of more interest. Very exciting possibilities...

@Wrek, this it is not fire coin. It is master hub variety. Is no sign of fire on this coin.

Yes the wigs show like broke. Is normal for this transitory coin struck with die for silver on clad. The die broke (chip). Your coin is part of the test they do to see if they can use same dies for the next production. They are many factors of this. Is not here the place to explain all.

didn't realise there was a second coin, I'll keep an eye in the thread to see where it goes. Hope you found something nice, I am bad with die pairing for US coins so I'll just watch from here.

Sorry Rocky, Sil had me so amazed by his eye I did not see your post earlier.
Questions about photos you would like me to send. Just post them here? And let me get this straight, you want a picture of the coins standing upright is that correct? Or just laying flat side by side? Page 1 of thread I did post both obverse and reverse of the quarters. Do you want a zoomed in photo of the obverse and reverse of both separately? Sorry newbie here want to get it right for you! (I am at work but will get pics for you when I get home today!)
