I wonder if anyone could help me identify where this notgeld is from. It says it is a "Hartheimer Notgeld" and it is identified as being from the town of Hartheimer in every online mention I have found. But I have not been able to find any mention of such a town in Austria apart from in relation to this note. The note also has in smaller text "Linz a/d D", which is the city of Linz, which definitely is a real place. I wonder if that is its real origin, or whether Hartheimer is perhaps a suburb or company based in Linz at that time? Thanks in advance :)

Here is a link to a picture of the same note, since I am not able to upload a picture of my own: https://img.ricardostatic.ch/t_1800...6051096/0/1/

I think the location is Hartheim. I don't know German, but I think when they add the -er at the end it means it comes from the place. Berliner-from Berlin. Here's a wikipedia article of the castle there, which has a very awful history.

I saw that castle too, but it seems that only the castle is called Hartheim, not the surrounding area as well, which makes me wonder why this castle would print a notgeld?

I'm not an expert on notgeld by any means, but I read some time in the past that notgeld were used as both emergency currency and as collector's pieces sold to raise money for municipalities, which is why many of them look so awesome. Maybe this one was meant to raise money for the mental institution or issued by Linz as a way to raise money for the municipality. Just my thoughts as I don't know enough about this subject. I'm sure an expert will chime in on this one!

As marked on the lower left corner of the Notgeld, this was issued by the Upper Austrian State Charity Association (Oberösterreichischen Landeswohltätigkeitsverein), which was headquartered at Hartheim Castle at the time. Hartheim should be a district within the municipality of Alkoven.
