Hey people, was wondering if someone could help me out. I just signed up for a e-bay account so I could bid on a coin. It was my first try to buy. I placed a bid and by the time my bid was confirmed I was out bid. It happened so fast it seemed strange,so I kept bidding just to see if I could even be #1 bidder for even a second but it wouldn't happen. My question is is there someone just driving up the price because no one even bid till I did, and just to see if it would stop I bid way way over any price that would be reasonable for someone to pay yet the bid kept going up. It wasn't fun for my first try on e-bay I left with a feeling of it being a bad scam. whats the trick Edited by Forum Mom to move to Auction Forum from Main Coin Forum

Could it be due to an other person's high bid (maximum)? e.g. you bid, $5, then $10, $15 but someone - earlier - bid $40. Every time you bid, you were automatically outbid.

you could be right, that was my first attempt so I don't know. It was the fact that I was the first bidder and it went way beyond a price that was worth paying. So maybe someone wanted so bad they were willing to pay way to much I don't know. I'll try again when the right item comes available.

The best thing you can do is to decide on a price you are willing to pay for the item and put that in as your max. If you just bit manually it is easy to get excited and perhaps bit more than you planned.

sounds good thats what i'll try next, only what happens if say the start bid is .99 cent the you bid a high of 10. dollars and nobody else bids. now do you have to pay 10 dollars when the start bid was only .99 cent. ? and thanks for the advice.

If nobody else bids even though your maximum is $10, if the start price is $.99, you're getting it for $.99 (+ shipping if it's not free )

chumpchange, ebay can be a worthwhile venue for picking up needed coinage, but there are many pitfalls associated with doing business there. We have a special thread that is predominantly for ebay further down the page. It has sections for recommended and non-recommended sellers as well, based on personal experiences of CCF members. There are many threads that offer sage advice. I would recommend you give it a quick read and hit us with any questions you may have. Learned the hard way.

I would also spend some time on ebay under the help section - especially related to how the proxy bidding system works. It sounds to me as if someone else had bid above the current price (a proxy bid), and as you bid, ebay kept putting in a proxy bid on their behalf. Ken

Even though there are millions of bidders out there, sometimes they miss auctions. I was able recently to nail a mint set for 99 cents because I had bid on another coin offered by the seller and then trolled through his other auctions to see if I could pick up something else for the same shipping price. And so I did. He was a good sport about it, too.

I recommend you watch items first before bidding. This way prices don't go up. Normally an auction last 6 days more or less and on the last day of auction you can bid if you see the price is still within your reach.

There was probably a reserve were you have to reach a certin price that the seller is demanding before that senario lets you win the item check your e:mail when you win but do not I repeat do not except the win because you might win on the same coin but with an other seller on the same item for a lower price a littel while later keep checking your e:mail and buy from the lowest price seller dont jump the gun on the first win most first time ebay buyers dont know this good luck !

I'm a sniper. I don't use software, I just time my best offer bid to hit with one or two seconds remaining on the auction. Dial-uppers can forget this tactic. I've placed bids on items with days remaining prior to close. From a "buyers" perspective, that draws attention to something I'd prefer to keep quiet. I then watched as bids piled up one after the other. Not any more. I preview days in advance and if I see something interesting, I put it on my watch list. If the bidding hasn't gone ballistic I'll prep my bid about 10 minutes before close (I watch and bid on separate screens). I sync with ebay time thru the "refresh" button and wait till two seconds prior to close before launching my bid. Even sniper programs can't react. I'm around 90% successful. Those I've lost went for way more than I was willing to pay and those bids were received prior to mine. Sellers would prefer that I take a more conventional approach and bid like a true auction. ebay isn't set up this way. Whoever gets the highest bid in at close, wins. When I sell, I understand these dynamics. I always start at .99 and have no reserve to encourage nominal bidding, thus bringing more attention to the auction.

Quote: I'm a sniper. I don't use software, I just time my best offer bid to hit with one or two seconds remaining on the auction. Me too! It's the only way to reliably win on ebay IMO. The best description I heard of the effectiveness of sniping is this: Regular bidders bid for a bargain and hope for a win; snipers bid for a win and hope for a bargin. Ken
