I was going to post this as an extreme example of deterioration but I caught this mint mark that looked like it was rotated. Examples of this for other dimes are included for reference. My question is could this have been a hand punched mint mark gone wrong ?

Before 1990 the mintmarks were added after the die was created.

Thus they can been in various locations on the target area and the turned a bit.

Being done by hand punching the mintmark punch into the die, they can vary.

In 1990 the were part of the design by the master hub. So they will all be in the same location. Thus there are not RPM's after 1989. They are showing what looks like a RPM post 1990, the it is often extreme die wear, DDD or Machine Doubling.

But note the mintmark can be doubled on these coins, but are not called RPM, they are doubled dies.

CoopHome: Why are these not collectable on the different mintmark locations? hand punched until 1989 -1990 forward MM on the die

OK Looks like my guess was right. I find it amazing that most of the mint marks punched by hand was spot on by the location. Thanks Coop for the examples. It really helps.

They are added to the dies back then at the mintmark that created the dies. (Often, just at Philly through most years) All the dies are created now at the mint locations. Mintmarks are not added to the coins. If they were, they would be incuse on the coins. When it is on the die, these will be negatives of the coins. Meaning the design will be mirrored and incuse instead of raised.

While the devices on the image looks like it is raised, they are set into the die below the fields. the fields are the outside edge of the dies. Possibly the reflection of the flash, makes this appear raised, then it is actually below the surface.
