The incorporation of a signature (not the artist's initials) within a coin's design is something that has happened in the coinage of countries around the world and over many years (though it appears to have reached a new level of popularity among collector coins of the last 20 to 30 years).

I thought it might be interesting to create a gallery of such coins and get a sense of how widespread the design choice is.

Note: This thread is about coins that incorporate a full signature into their design - it's not about regular coins that are graded/encapsulated and in a holder that features a label/insert that bears a signature.

First up is a US commemorative silver dollar from 1997 - the Jackie Robinson 50th Anniversary coin.

The coin was struck to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball (MLB) by making the major league team of the Brooklyn Dodgers of the National League and playing in his first game in 1947.

Jackie Robinson's signature is incorporated into the design found on the coin's reverse. The silver dollar was part of a two-coin set that also included a gold Half Eagle ($5.00 coin); the design on the gold piece did not include Robinson's signature.

The coin's obverse is the work of Al Maletsky; the reverse design was created by T. James Ferrell.

My collection includes uncirculated versions of the silver and gold coins, plus a proof gold as part of the special edition Legacy Set which includes a proof Half Eagle, a custom baseball card, a 50th anniversary patch and an anniversary lapel pin.

Nice!

Over the years, I've toyed with the idea of a Captain Cook themed collection. He has become such a popular topic for recent collector coins, however, that I realized that I would have to set some clear parameters/time frames for what I would pursue (if I ever did). Otherwise, it could become all-consuming!

Here's one of the two 2006 US commemorative silver dollars issued to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin in 1706. This one - the Founding Father type - includes a facsimilie of Benjamin Franklin's signature on its obverse. (The other Franklin commemorative silver dollar - the Scientist type - does not feature a signature.)

The coin's obverse design and engraving is the work of Don Everhart; the reverse design and engraving was handled by Donna Weaver
