Lithuania 1 centu - their first coin in over 50 years after shaking off decades of COMMUNIST tyranny.

As we leave 1991 and head back into the 80s, we will get to see some more communist and eastern block coins off me.

1990 - the year Milli Vanilli (I thought they were called Matrobald Giovanni originally) were unmasked as lipsynching fakes.

New coins came NZ's way in 1990, although the $1 and $2 were officially released in Feb 1991 and the 20 cent coins took until 1994 to arrive in our pockets.

And an uncirculated set of them. The other coins 5c, 10c, 50c were not released for circulation at all and this set appeared in mid 1991!

Only in New Zealand!

Australian circulating coins included a very nice $2, 10c and 5c as always and the 1 cent coin (Last year to circulate). No 2c, 50c, $1 or 20c were issued into circulation for them.

Also issued in 1990 was a one off set of coins for the sesqui centennial of NZ (150 years). This featured new designs and was issued only in uncirculated and proof sets.

Here is a proof silver set of them. It was also the last large size dollar issued. Although small dollars were dated 1990, they came out in early 1991 - this set was rush released for February 1990 when the 150th anniversary actually took place.

The coins remain protected in their perspex cases.

In 1990 the UK issued a cupro-nickel 38mm £5 coin to commemorate the Queen Mother's 90th birthday. This was the UK's first base metal £5 coin - previously, crown-size cupro-nickel coins had a face value of 5 shillings or 25p.

The normal circulating coins included bronze penny and twopence:

1990 was the year the 5p coin (which had been the same size as the George III shilling first issued in 1816) was reduced in size to smaller than a US dime. This BU set includes the new 5p at the top, with the old 5p below the 10p. Old 5p's and shillings were withdrawn on December 31, 1990. The large 5p, 10p and 50p were not issued for circulation in 1990. The £1 coin shows a leek, symbol of Wales:

NumisRob - That is interesting that the £5 coin first dropped in 1990, the same time our large dollar changed to the small one and the first $5 coin was issued in the same size (Although the $5 coin of 1990 was aluminium bronze, but same size with Australia).

Starting in 1991, they became cupronickel and they are still made today. The only 1990 large dollar was the Waitangi one I showed in my 2nd 1990 post.

More 1990 coins

Ireland £1 Punt - Stag. This was the first year of the £1 coin there, a large steel coin in the style of the Percy Metcalfe animal designs (All decimal Irish coins reused the Percy Metcalfe animal designs of 1928 and this was a new one!)

Greece - 100 Drachma, like the Punt this was a new denomination of coin for Greece, it replaced a note and it shows Alexander the Great as Apollo on one side and the sun symbol of Philip II's of Macedon's grave at Vergina. 1990 dated coins of this type are scarce with only 750k minted.

Fiji 50 cents and 20 cents. Similar to earlier dates, except now the coins were stainless steel. These were the first issues since 1987 - but unlike those coins, these were NOT cupro nickel.

I have done some new scans and my 1980s will be better represented than the early/mid 1990s.

The first USSR coin in this thread, from the second-last year of their existence (the Soviet Union dissolved in late December 1991; there's a very scarce 10 rubles coin dated 1992, apparently made by the Leningrad mint in expectation that the country would make it into the new year).

This one is an impaired proof 1 ruble, commemorating Marshal Georgi Zhukov (1896-1974). I'm not sure (offhand) why 1990, considering that it wasn't a round anniversary of either his birth or his death; maybe it's for the 45th anniversary of V-E day.
I have some of the 1991 commemoratives too, but no pics, unfortunately. Something to make sure of for the next edition!
