All these were minted in San Franciso at the time, which as far as I know was not issuing any circulation coins then.

1984 is an interesting year, New Zealand actually minted all the coins except 5c and 10c but the mintages of the 20c and 50c were very low and are seldom seen.

The 1c and 2c are more common, but compared to 1982 and 1986, the years 1983, 84 and 85 were lean years. Again we have the low quality thin "Canadian" minting.

Again you can see the large $1 showed an endangered bird and this coin shows the older and better Machin portrait of the Queen. It was minted in Australia.

My Australia for 1984 includes every coin but the 20c - this coin was minted, but apparently all melted as 1983 and 1984 20c were minted mostly for the video game (Spacies) craze, but this burned out a bit and there were millions of 1982 coins left. It meant that no more 20c were released for general circulation until 1994!

As you can see, we are back in Machin portraits now and I have all the coins including the new godl coloured dollar coin showing a Mob or Roos. The first year mintage was huge (100+ million) and these coins are still found now!

I've posted one of these coins recently in the Elizabeth II memorial thread. Now I'm posting both of them in this thread.

Saint Helena, Ascension Island, 50 pence, commemorating the royal visit of Prince Andrew in April 1984.

Reportedly those two coins were issued as a set in a presentation folder. I bought mine separately from different places though!

For circulation, St. Helena and Ascension have combined coinage (featuring both islands in the legend), but for some reason for a bunch of commemoratives they did separate issues.
In this case it was a paired issue from each island; the coins look almost identical except for the island name.

1984 was the last year British coins used the Machin portrait. It was not a great year for British coins in change: only the 1p, 20p and £1 were issued for circulation. The proof and BU sets included the halfpenny (last issue), 2p, 5p, 10p and 50p - here are the proof halfpenny and Two pence:

Argentina 1 peso - this coin had a very short life, as the peso was replaced by the Austral which didn't last very long either - by 1990 the smallest note in circulation was 100 Australes!

The Spanish 2 pesetas of 1984 was another short-lived coin, as in 1989 the Spanish redesigned their coinage so that every coin from 1 to 500 pesetas was size-related, and the 2Pta didn't fit in between the 1 and 5 pesetas:

Yes I agree NumisRob, by 1984 that Machin portrait was tired, yet many countries kept it for longer, it lasted until 1989 in Canada and even the 1990s in Hong Kong.

Here is a whole set of 1984 English coins!

1985 is there too, I am sure I can bend the rules just this once as I am too lazy to cut it off the photo.

Also its educational as you see the difference a year makes, we change portraits and lose the worthless ½ new penny coin!

Here is the USA Proof set and its 1984 coins only

Tried to do close up to get a better view of coins.

Finally the best thing that happened with 1984 (J Buck showed an ad, so surely I can show this)

Australia was not the only place to join the big dollar club in 1984. These behemoths got used for nearly 30 years as you can see.
