Dorado - its great you have that 20 centavo coin with that rubber lipped statue (El Miguel Jagger). What could you actually buy with it, like one bean or something. I love ultra low face value coins!

Now 1983

NZ minted only 3 coins and the mintages were low by 1982 standards. We are now back to the "chunky" Machin era which will dominate back to 1967.

Again 2 of the large dollars came out, the 50th anniversary of coinage came with the standard set of coins and then the visit of now King Charles and his first wife Diana Spencer led to a second dollar coin issue.

In addition to the sets, one could buy these coins separately with the usual fire engine 80s red for the Royal coin.

Those with cash to splash could get the silver proof version

There were only 4 times, 2 large dollars came out in on year, you saw 86 and now 83, the other two were 1974 and 1970.

Australia went the whole hog and issued everything but the 20 cents in 1983, apparently the coins were minted, in anticipation of their necessity for the video game craze of the early 1980s, which saw jumbo numbers of 1982 dated 20 cent coins minted. However there were enough of them by 1983, and the home video game market took off despite the catastrophic collapse after the super rushed ET game by Atari. (I love 70s and 80s pop culture nuggets, sanity will return once we hit the 60s).

Yes we are far back enough in time now for no $1 coins, in 1983 $1 was still a bank note and you could buy a whole hot pie with the 50 cent piece. 2 or 3 of them could get the latest Men at Work single.

I also have a 1983 proof set, no silver just super shined up coins and that super rare 20 cent coin!

1983 was a big year for UK coins as the £1 coin was issued for circulation for the first time. It was also the last year the halfpenny was struck for circulation - it's quite scarce with a mintage of only 7 million:

No 2p, 5p or 10p coins were issued for circulation in 1983. However, these are among the commonest British NCLT coins as over 600,000 BU sets were issued. Some of these were packaged specially for various food and drink companies, who offered free sets in return for proofs of purchase. Famously, some 1983 2p coins were struck in error with the pre-1982 reverse die, marked 'New Pence' instead of 'Two Pence'. As many of the 'sponsored' 1983 sets were broken up by their recipients and spent, there is a genuine - though slight - chance of finding a 1983 mule 2p in circulation! (I found 1983 5p and 10p coins in circulation in the late 1980s that can only have come from BU sets).
Here's the new pound coin in all its glory:

Guernsey redesigned its pound coin to match the UK issue:

French 5, 10 and 100 Franc coins - the 5F, with a mintage of 100,000, is one of the scarcest coins I've ever found in circulation (in France!) and the 10F commemorates 19th-century writer Stendhal. The silver 100F coin shows the Pantheon, a building in Paris where heroes of the country are buried:
