Welcome to 1982, where the 80s are starting to grow afros and flares, yes the 70s are coming. First of all US proof sets go back to a disco red colour.   We have a medal also with the 5 coins here. This will be my last US set for a while. I suspect the medal showed up because they expected another Anthony dollar, and the mint pulled the plug on them in 1981. It was similar to 1979 when the Ike sized hole had to be plugged to make way for the much smaller Anthony dollar.   NZ issued all the coins in 1982 and it was a huge year for coins, particularly the 20 cent coin, which was minted in large numbers to accommodate the Video game craze. Known as Spacies after the 1976 game "Space Invaders" these machines required 20 cent coins and arcades opened up with them everywhere. They soon attracted criticism as many were dark and sleazy, attracted street kids and so much milk money was stolen (Yep these were the days of milk bottles being left out with change for the milkman) that milk companies stopped home deliveries by 1987. It also attracted racism as many of the best players were Maori and Islander and again still had those left over afros and flares of the 1970s. I remember being a Galaga assassin! Some arcades were shut down as Marijuana and cocaine were being traded along with street gangs and gambling machines. Numbers of coins issued were crazy, some 20 million 10 cent coins, 18 million each of the 20 and 50 cents and 50 million each of the 5c and 10c. NZ had a population of 3.2 million in 1982! Most years 4 or 5 million of each coin over 5 cents were issued. Not until 1987 and then the 2000s would that many coins would be issued again.   The dollar featured a large flightless bird - The Takahe. Edited by Princetane

The big news in the UK in 1982 was the introduction of the 20 pence piece:  The year saw two more innovations. As decimal currency had now been in use for 11 years, it was thought appropriate to remove the word 'New' from the reverses of coins and replace it with the value in words. It was also the year when The Royal Mint started issuing annual BU sets - they had issued annual proof sets since 1970, but the only previous official BU sets had been in 1953 for the Queen's coronation and the set released in 1968 with the first decimal coins:  The 1982 2p, 5p and 10p were not issued for circulation:   The Isle of Man continued with its unstoppable outpouring of 38mm 'crowns' commemorating nothing in particular:  The Falkland Islands commemorated their liberation from the Argentine invasion:  Swiss 5 francs - centenary of the Gotthard Railway:  The Football World Cup was commemorated by numerous countries, including Hungary and Jamaica:   Costa Rica was suffering from inflation and changed its formerly cupro-nickel 25 centimos to aluminium:  No such problems for neighbouring Panama, whose currency is linked to the US dollar:    Cuba commemorated Ernest Hemingway, a long-time resident of Key West, on a peso coin:  Edited by NumisRob
