Hello I would like to ask on this coin I found why does it have a double 9 on top of each other & a double 11 The first 1 on left is single & clear. The end 1 is like the 9 doubled layered. I don't understand how only 2 numbers in a single date can be layered. Please Advise Edited by Plainduck 08/14/2022 11:48 pm

@plain, first welcome to CCF. Second, that looks like Machine Doubling on the date.

to the CCF! What ever you do, DO NOT CLEAN THIS COIN!! If the rest of the coin is this nice it could be worth several hundred dollars. Cleaning it can make it shiny, but destroy any collectable value. If you could post full images of the coin, obverse and reverse, we would love to see this RARE Lincoln Cent!
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

Agree with all above. This example could be a good album hole filler until better comes along--'31 S coins don't pop up every day.
Full, large and sharp pics of the obverse and reverse could tell us more.

...got a good start with a key date Lincoln...get an album and fill the rest up. with the others that your '31-S is a case of Machine Doubling (MD). KK

The reason Machine Doubling may occur on only some devices is that the die is convex. After the strike, as the die separates from the coin, it does so first at the edges. During a fraction of a second that separation proceeds toward the center. If the coin or die shifts only during part of the separation, only part of the coin will exhibit Machine Doubling, thereby creating something like the digit 9 on your coin.

Maybe it's just my phone but that 3 doesn't look right. Like the font is wrong.

I will like to see full picture of this coin observe and reverse. I see is BR. This coin is not an hole filler, is one a few most rare cents of the period. Only 800K strike and survive estimation only a few thousands (less then 5000)

I agree with the others that question the coins authenticity.
