Go get 'em, Earle! I grew up calling a penny a penny, and a Buffalo nickel a Buffalo nickel. I'm perfectly capable of understanding the nuances offered in all cases, but hain't gonna change my ways for some 21st century snowflakes!!!

LOL!
I had to keep rewriting it b/c my equus kept neighing and reminding me to change how the article came across

Refer away...glad you see some value in it!

As an aside, I have read quite a bit about the Comanche war chief, Buffalo Hump. For taxonomic accuracy, should we change his name in the texts to Bison Hump? After all, buffalo do not have humps...

Well, to be technically correct, we have to remember bison is not a stand-alone noun, but a genus description/classification.

So if it's snowing out, we need to rename him as Bison-Type Hump. But...as you said, it is not technically a hump (made o fatty tissue), although it is somewhat hump-shaped.

So how about Bison-type Muscle-dome?

Technically we should use "facial tissue," b/c Kleenex is only a brand name.
The term you are looking for is generic (or genericized) trademark. The list is long.

Thank you! I knew there was something not quite right about that but was having too much fun trying to keep the animal facts in my head LOL!

"Frisbee" being on the list reminded me of my Ultimate playing days long ago. You were a real dweeb if you called it "Ultimate frisbee." You'd get the lecture: " 'frisbee' is a registered trademark of the Wham-O corporation, the game is called Ultimate, period, and we play with discs, not Frisbees." Quite like the penny/cent thing I suppose.

No problem! It reminds me of my restaurant days...

"Can I get a Coke?"

"We do not have Coke. Is Pepsi okay?"

"I do not care what kind of Coke you have, just bring me one!"

You and I both know Pepsi is superior.

Buffalo is to Bison as Toning is to Tarnish & etc. Call it as you like. Numismatic terms can take on a different meaning to those perfectionists not in the numismatic community. Next time you are on a bourse floor stop by a dealers table and ask him if he has any nicely tarnished Bison nickels. Do not be surprised if he recognizes you as a neophyte and directs you to the Junk box
How much was the Juice at the auction?. Are you talking Orange, Grape or Tomato. ?
Good read Earle42. Thank you for posting.

Buffalo nickels are what I collect.
Bison is what I prefer my hamburgers and hotdogs to be made of.

Buffalo nickel because a few decades of common law oral history matters.

In other words, this is what what my grandma and mother called them ain't no one going to tell me they weren't right. They knew all.

Miss Liberty on the Walking Liberty half dollar is actually dancing. The real term for the coin is the dancing liberty half dollar. How can you look at one of those and not think it is dancing?
