I still have a way to go before I hit 2500 posts, but I'm going to get a contest going in anticipation of that milestone. I'm going to combine two of my favorite pastimes - coins and drag racing. No, I don't race anymore (I ran a drag bike in my younger days on local tracks) just enjoy watching the big races. September 25th is the local NHRA race at ZMax raceway in Charlotte, NC. The contest will be to pick the winners in the four professional categories - TF Dragster, TF Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle. This will give you a head start on getting to know the top drivers and plan your strategy. There will be two prizes - a Morgan dollar and a Peace dollar - both in nicely circulated condition. Winner gets their pick and runner up gets the leftover. Tie breaker (if needed) will be to guess the top speed in each final round for the winners. No guessing yet - some drivers may not be in the running in a month. I will announce when the picks can begin and end, and will ask that they be emailed to me at that time. When the picks are in, I'll put them here for everyone to see ahead of the race. I'm willing to send prizes to any winner if the mail can get to them. I'll come back with more details as the race day approaches. For those unfamiliar with the drivers, go to the following website for details: https://www.nhra.com/standings/2022...tab=top-fuel"Nummi rari mira sunt, si sumptus ferre potes." - Christophorus filius Scotiae

TF = Top Fuel (nitromethane.) A person's chances of winning are 200% / # of entrants.

I hope the prizes don't equal a coin run over by a drag racer ;) Just kidding congrats on almost 2500 posts.

Not to hijack your contest but I just had to compile this post about our local 1/8th mile country drag strip. Every Sunday, spring til fall, in the late 60's, Me and my buddy would go down to the corner and hitch a 5 mile ride to "Kel Reca" drag strip south of Hazelton PA and north of Tamaqua off rt 309 in Ginther. If we were lucky, some gear head would pick us up and take us right in through the gate. It got to the point where we got picky as to when to stick our thumb out. Sometimes we got a ride back home with the same. There were about a half dozen stars we would hope would show up. My favorite was 55 chevy Jail Bait. I still have a picture someplace of it that I took with my white YES polaroid camera. Here it is with Mountain Dew, a 56 Chevy Nomad wagon, in the crude build up area. I am sure they both had 427's with HURST shifters. The flag man was a Rock Star performer in his high water bell bottoms. Always there every Sunday. I think he was one of the older Pureka kids. The other half owner was the oldest Kelner boys, thus the name of the strip. I think it cost kids 50 cents and adults a buck or two to get in. If you had extra money, there was a small concession stand at the finish line in the pits. There goes Koerner Ford, named after the dealership and it had wheelie bars. Looks like it was in a qualifying run. Here it is racing Hemi Mouse, a late 30's plymouth in metal flake red paint. ( My other favorite ). Sometime the Ford took the trophy, sometimes the mouse. Usually the event of the day. If it was very hot and we took along our swim suits and had more money, we would go to the Valley Drive In swimming pool and call my buddys sister to come pick us up later before the pool closed. A perfect day!

Thanks for the flashback, @TNG! I loved it.
Most of what we had in Fayetteville, NC were weekend warrior garage projects running against the clock. Every now and then, I'd go to the Winston Invitational in Rockingham to see the big boys run (back then, very few ladies raced - unlike now when several of the championship contenders are female.) I remember seeing Bill Jenkins, Tom McEwen, Don Prudhomme, , Don Garlits, Gene Snow, Dick Landy, Ronnie Sox (from just down the road,) Bob Glidden (my favorite) and other legends run over the years. I even saw Jungle Jim and Jungle Pam once as an adolescent (who can forget Pam!!!)

Contest time is getting closer. I'll be providing more info regarding entries as the week progresses. I'll also attempt to get photos of the two dollars up for grabs.

FYI - they've pulled the P/S Motorcycle event from Charlotte. We will only be interested in Pro Stock Car, Top Fuel Dragster and Top Fuel Funny Car.
