Here's another "Mint Fiction" as I like to think of them, from the Philadelphia mint. This 2000(P) Virginia State Quarter was struck normally and was then Overstruck with a pair of 2000(P) Lincoln Memorial cent dies.

I'm almost 100% sure that this was done intentionally by a mint employee, but there is the slightest of chances it was struck and then somehow returned to a press for the Lincoln Cent and overstruck.

This coin is up for auction at Heritage Galleries https://coins.ha.com/itm/errors/200...ption-071515 Current bid $5750.00 plus the 20% buyer's premium with 15 days until the hammer drops.

This one surfaced at the same time that the others did, over 2 decades ago. They were Sac Dollars and ST Quarters overstruck by Cent Dies. Fred Weinberg handled some. Here are two of the ones that I handled:

I'm willing to bet that a Mint employee took that dollar coin and placed it in the cent striking chamber and had the machine strike the cent over the dollar. I noticed that the obverse and the reverse of the 'cent' have the correct orientation to strike normal cent coins.

I love these!

They really make me wonder what is out there. I know that I'll never have a coin like one of these, but I'm fascinated by them!

I've been collecting errors and varieties for 50 years now. My greatest find was one of the Cheerios Dollars back in 2000. I searched all year and ate LOTS of cereal while doing so. I never thought of it being worth more than maybe $100 or so, just because of the 'Mint' Certificate of Authenticity on the package.

I had the coin for 13 years before hearing about the prototype reverse. Somehow, I feel that that will always be my greatest find.
